End of another era.
Very sad to read in the local paper this last week the passing away of Joan Turner. The dance teacher who founded the Dance School on George Street in Rochdale.
Not mentioned much but managed to put Rochdale on the world dancing map by producing a couple of champions at both national and international level in Ballroom and Latin American dancing. One in particular Latin and Ballroom World Champion Marcus Hilton who was a world champion ten times over the years.
So if we are going to remember talented people who lived in Rochdale let us not forget Joan Turner who contributed to the world of dancing over the years and to the local community. Turners dance school has no doubt brought many couples together and made lots of friends and for young people to go to who wanted to learn how to dance and meet other people.
Joan Turner has contributed a lot to Rochdale and let us not forget that and will be sadly missed.

Sorry to hear that news. I concur with your praise for the lady and her husband. Turners was one of the first small ballrooms to provide 'Beat Nites' for the younger end in the 60s. I know 'cause I booked in most of the groups that played there. Not the best of talented musicians but a good place for many to learn their art. Fee - £10 for four half hour spots which came out at £2-10 shillings for each memebr of the group (normally 4) less of course my commission. My how times have changed. A good meeting place and they were good teachers - me and the missus returned there in the mid 70s to learn Latin American most of which I can still do with some style even today - God I was good

I learned some of my 'arts' at the Beat Nights. Nothing to do with music or dancing though although I did earn compliments on some of my movements.

You're never to old to shake a tail-feather teamplayer2. Get the old gramophone out and find one of your cracked 78s of Bill Haley and the Comets. That'll make yer bones rattle.

TP2 was more of a Black Lace Man. 'Agadoo', 'Superman' etc.

Not sure about your 'ballroom' TP, could be a double entendre.
What with your dancing awards and those for your wine, beer and cake-making, sounds like you're running out of space on your mantlepiece.
All I've got is my 25 yard swimming certificate and my Cyclng Proficiency Test plus one from a secure mental health establishment telling me that they consider me safe to rejoin the community at large.
How wrong they were!
