Advertising
By the way, unlike RO who had a fairly robust policy on advertising for obvious commercial reasons, I don't have any objection to it on here so if you hear of some great bargain or something you want to share then go ahead.
The only thing is that you need to remember that libel can extend to companies as well as individuals so if you want to slag something off be mindful of this and if in doubt leave it out.
Not sure about adding hypetext links into posts but let's try it and see yhow it goes. If we get problems with it we can always scrap it. I don't want Rochdale Talk to get the blame for members being spammed out of their brains.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Re: Advertising
Just to make it clear BTW, when I say 'advertising', I don't mean that we intend to allow anyone to openly advertise goods and services. This ain't a source of free advertising.

Re: Advertising
Do you mean I can mention I'm a writer and publish books and not have my post deleted!!!!!! Or will I return to find a blank space as so often happened before?

What! You mean that I can post a link to the exact official government site that will provide the information that someone requires?
...and mention the name of the venue where I saw a concert?
... and even refer to the BBC news where most people see and hear news first ?
... or give a link to the the source of information in a discussion?
I do understand why RO had the restrictions, but it did get a little bit ridiculous at times.

Re: Advertising
We would have no problem with you plugging your books Atlas as they have a direct Rochdale connection and the ones we have read so far are very funny and nostalgic. We are hoping that T-Hoyle will join us soon and do likewise.
What we will not allow is for people to advertise their own or other peoples businesses.
Advertising is obviously a business in itself and we would not wish to provide people with some service that they would normally be expected to pay for gratis.
However, I anticipate that everyone will be interested to hear about local talent; albeit located to Wales and it will provoke some lively discussion.
If it pulls in one or two additional sales, all well and good. After all, we are not communists... any more!

Re: Advertising
Seems fair enough.
I was surprised with how much blatant advertising of ELR and other steam-related publicity the chuff-chuff (other methods of transport are available) brigade got away with on RO.

We are in the 'suck it and see' stage here Striding. If you want to refer to an item of news we would expect you to name your source simply for the purpose of clarity.
Rochdale Online is obviously a commercial operation. It is also our parent and we have left home for the first time! All very scary! An anxious time for both of us.
As said, let's just suck it and see. We are flying by the seat of our pants here. If it 'feels' ok we'll allow it. If it doesn't, we won't. Simples.
First and foremost, we are a non-profit-making community forum.

I think in the case of the ELR, any unintentional advertising may have been to some extent balanced by my own scathing comments about their lacksadaisical, pi**-poor attitude to their would-be volunteers Striding.
In my case, I would be tempted to carry out a bit of anti-advertising in the cases of Ryanair, Tetley-Carlsberg, Greggs and Talk-Talk but I guess that would be breaking the rules!
