Rubbish RMBC Empty Rubbish RMBC

Post  keithatrochdale Mon Dec 17, 2012 12:18 pm

Just had a leaflet through the letter box about rubbish collections.

My green rubbish bin was last emptied on the 14 December and will not be emptied until 11 January - 4 weeks.

This, surely must be a health hazard?

I foresee a lot of overflowing bins and bin bags strewn all over the place, especially with the extra that is always generated over Christmas.

Talking to a friend who has a flat in Tenerife, they have to put rubbish in the 'big bins' on the road side and they are empted each day. I know that we can not expect such service in the UK, but it makes you think how they can manage it!

BTW community charges out there are about £40 ............ for the year!!!

Will you all make sure you have your camera-phones with you whenyou are out and about over the next few days?

We want photos of those overflowing bins and mountains of uncollected rubbish.

Some digital photos are spoiled by camera shake. Do not jab at the shutter button, a calm press works better. Give some thought to composition and lighting. The most challenging aspect of rubbish photography is that rubbish on a photo can look annoyingly picturesque, to compensate for this, get the camera down low, and do not be afraid to seek out gruesome detail.

Rubbish RMBC Empty MP

Post  Striding Mon Dec 31, 2012 5:07 pm

I presume that Rochdale's MP is not personally affected by the lack of Rochdale rubbish collection, like many of the senior council staff.

Are the refuse staff all being forced to take their leave over the long Christmas refuse break, are they not being paid, or are they on training or other duties?

Will they have to work overtime to catch up with the extra volume of rubbish, plus fly-tipped rubbish when they do eventually return?

It does seem (to we outside your illustrious town) that you are being governed by a set of clowns. Either they are on something or they haven't a bloody clue in the first place. Either way - god help you. Sad

Post  teamplayer2 Tue Jan 01, 2013 11:26 am

I did not have some recycled rubbish collected before Christmas when everyone else did on my street. Enquired why they did not collect mine I could not believe the answer I was given.

Anyone I mentioned it too including a neighbour find it rather odd and just what do we pay our rates for. I was going to go to the media but the bin men came round a couple of days later to collect the rubbish they missed. I think this was done because I said I would take it further but not sure if it is of any interest on what I was told by a council employee.

My partner and I still find it hard to believe on what the council employee said to us and you could not make it up but then again this is the world of the Rochdale Council.

Do you want me to tell you the tale or not? Up to you folks but it does show what some people in the council think of the public, but the employee was talking about the public in general.

OK I will tell you then.

When I phoned the Refuse/Recycle Collection Department at Rochdale Council.

The female employee answered the phone. I informed her about my food/garden waste bin not being emptied when everyone else has on my street. She asked if I was sure about that, and I told her that it had not even been moved from the spot I had taken it for it to be collected and emptied..

I asked now that the food waste is now added to the garden waste if the garden waste had been stopped for the winter. No was the reply.

Then she said " The refuse staff do not need to empty the recycle bins and that they only do it as a favour. You only pay for the general refuse collected in the green rubbish bin."

So I said " I thought it was part of the same service and that it is paid for through the council tax".

She said replied "No".

So rather puzzled I replied " That I have a back and front garden and had some garden waste in the brown bin which has been missed on a couple of occasions. I was just asking why this has happend! It is part of the service and what you are saying is I am lucky to have all my recycled waste collected and you can stop this service at anytime and just have my green bin emptied only. So what do I pay my council tax for then!"

The reply I got was " You are lucky to have gardens to your home and she has only a back yard and lives in a terraced home. So do other people and you do not know are lucky to have your recycled waste collected and it has never been in the budget for general waste collection. So we only collect garden waste and other recycled waste as a favour and as an added service".

I replied " That may be the case but other people may have gardens and live in larger homes, but in general they may pay more council tax and payed more for their homes. Though we all pay council tax and I always thought this was part of the service".

I was told " This has never been the case".

I decided to end the call but I said I will look further into this and contact my local councillors to have this confirmed. I did ring fiurther in the day and another employee in the council refuse department confirmed what she said and said that they only collected recycled waste as a favour. We only pay for the green bins to be emptied. I did mention about taking this further and confirming what they said with councillors and managers of the council.

Like I said they came to collect and emptied my brown bin a few days later just before Christmas.

So people if they decide to make further cutbacks they could stop emptying our recycled waste when I thought we paid for it as part of the service. Though do the council make a profit from the rcycled waste?

We have a dark green bin for general waste, a pale green one with blue lid for cans and bottles, a blue one for paper/cardboard and a brown one for garden and food waste.
Our street doesnt have access to the back gardens except through the houses so the bins are all kept at the front...looks great when you enter the street to see the line up of bins, mine is the last house on the block of 8 so I could pass up to 32 bins by the time I get to my house. Mad

Me too. I asked everyone in the 4 ale bar yesterday and they were of the opinion that incisive and thoughtful topics could include

What day is it?
Is it your round?
Is there life before death?

What do others on here ‘think’.

Matron where’s me dictionary of the ridiculous it’s a new year and THEY are still about.

I see you also followed some earlier commands about giving thought to composition and not being afraid.

It's obvious that your council have lost it Charly. I don't think that even an idiot could come up with a collection scheme like that -considering the number of houses in the town without gardens or proper access. We have two bags and (but rarely ever used) a brown bin the size of a small bucket for kitchen waste. The black bag (and bin) is collected fortnightly and the blue bag fortnightly - thus every Mon morning pre-dawn the bag is removed. Glass has to be taken to a bottle bank by the householder. Now of course almost everyone here has a garden or land, less than 10% don't, and therefore to remove garden or other waste is relatively easy. Wouldn't a large skip/container (allowing limited access for loading) at the end of every street - (one half for kitchen waste/ one half garden waste) be somewhat more sensible an arrangement thus removing half the loose bins in one go. Perhaps two large skips the other for glass/cans & paper/cardboard???? Thus removing all but the large green bin?????? The bins must be a hazard both to pedestrians and traffic. I don't think someone gave the problem very much thought and probably simply followed the lead of others - after all - who cares anyway!!!!!!! Certainly not your council.

I dont have a garden front or back. Just a yard.

There was a thread a bit ago about skips at the end of the street. it was quite a lively thread.

The multiple plastic bin arrangement isn't really suitable for traditional type terraced housing.

Speaking about Accrington, Hyndburn Council deputy leader Clare Pritchard said: "The problem here is not a lack of housing, it's that we have the wrong kind of housing. We found that there's no call for 'two up, two down' housing anymore."

Didn't you also get the brown Caddie-bin for foodstuffs that you're supposed to keep in your kitchen, line with bio-degradeable bags that you buy from somewhere, then empty these contents into your big, brown outside bin Question

Those biodegradable bags don't stop the smells from the decomposing food though. I don't want two bins stinking in summer so all our non compostable food waste goes into the landfill bin.

We got lucky this year as our landfill bin schedule meant it was emptied as normal this week.
