Payments for celebrities

Post  teamplayer2 on Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:17 pm

With all the cutbacks in Rochdale. What is all that about paying over £7000 for a so called celebrity coming to Rochdale?

I thought the money paid by council tax payers had to be spent on more important things in Rochdale.

They are used to paying silly money for silly things. You can't change the habits of a lifetime in a few months.
Letters of complaint and more use of 'public' forums' will take time to sink in. But you WILL get there eventually.

Sometimes complaining helps and you do get somewhere. But the only way things can change is to vote them out. But then again we could get lumbered with a nother shower of Cllrs.

It is incredible how some things becomes common practice. I guess it's a balancing act for the organisers. Get someone famous in and you'll more likely get the crowds and publicity, or have a more low key event and you'll get less. My issue is with the definition of famous these days and also with the infatuation with having to get an official opening into the media at all costs. I guess the organisers will think it looks good on their CV.

It is only good practice to spend money on celebs 'if' the event is a fund-raising or 'for profit' promotion. Publicity for 'town events' will attract publicity through the local media regardless as local news is not that easy to come by in the first place. The council spends thousands a year with the local press if only through advertising for council jobs or council tenders. No self-respecting local newspaper would ignore (at their peril) a 'town' event. I know - I've been there. Ergo - a 3rd rate celeb is a waste of good money as the 'attraction' will be nominal. Success can only be assured providing a) the acts/celebs are of national interest and good quality b) the event is attractive enough both in content and placement and c) a 'good/experienced' team leader is available to put it all together. It's not rocket science - but it is a 'science' of sorts and needs 'nounce'. Neutral
