Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Took my car in to Pentagon today for a 'Winter check', its 3 years old with just over 20,000 on the clock, the check reveals
A) I need a new clutch as the bite point is 'high' ...its no different from when I bought it.
Cost £895.20 or £399 as I'm a Vauxhall club member.
B) Big engine breather hose split, small hose swollen both need replacing.
Cost £86.28 minus 15% reduction for club members
C)front anti roll bar/link excess play and knocking.
Cost £79.20 minus 15% reduction for members.
I asked what it was worth in part-ex and told £3,700 as 'it needs work'
I said thanks but no thanks I'll nip round to the Peugeot garage and see what they have to offer there, he looked as though I'd slapped him
Spoke to the guy where I always buy my tyres, he laughed when I told him the prices.
I'm having it looked at by an independant garage on Monday
I'll update what happens, but I'm about fed up of people taking the proverbial when they see a woman coming in with a car
Just done some research online and find 2 clutch kits for Corsas,
one is £77.65 the other £119.51 both include vat
Link rods £9.33 inc vat
Breather hoses £6.06 each
I appreciate the skill of the mechanic needs to be paid for but the price of the clutch especially is a joke, even buying the dearer one at £119.51 the Pentagon price of £895.20 means a labour charge of £775.69!

Get your other quote. Employ someone in the trade who 'needs' the work. And tell the other lot what you think of them and their prices. You might mention you have made it public at the same time. See how that grabs them.

Main dealers often charge £100 an hour labour and charge by the full hour. Independents charge far less, often around £30 in my experience, and some even charge to the minute. My local garage does this, so that's where I go.

£100 per hour. Tch. A mere bagatelle. Tried hiring a lawyer recently or a neuro-surgeon? Mind you. You would need the latter if you had.

I must have been one of the unlucky ones Nicki, have you ever bought a car from there?

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Well, surprise surprise, the quote for the 2 lesser jobs from the independant garage was actually £14 more than the main dealer price (after my club member discounts)
One good thing, he didn't find anything wrong with my clutch!

I suppose you could say that, only problem now is I've lost a bit of confidence in the car, do I chance going any distance in it or not?
Dont fancy breaking down any distance from home

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
depends what the problems are. The minor isues you described are reasonable wear and tear and should be picked up as part of the regular service and maintenance regime.
If you run a car of virtually any age, you need to pay for it's regular maintenance. The older the car, the more is likely to be worn, and the cost/benefit of replacing the car (with attendant depreciation) or carrying out expensive maintenance, but continue not to have to invest new capital into a wasting asset has to be properly assessed.
I run older cars and keep them well maintained - it's far cheaper that way.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Its serviced to the book by the main dealer John, its 3 years old, I wouldnt expect to need a new clutch after 20,600 miles..I've had old bangers in the past and like you say, maintain them properly and they last longer, my 55 plate Corsa is still going strong with more than double the miles on the clock and its driven daily.
If it was a case of the way I drive I would have expected one of my earlier cars to have had a problem, they were all a lot older.

Bit the clutch did not need replacing...

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
But I was told it did need replacing...that is, until I got a 2nd opinion.
I have no qualms whatsoever about paying a fair price for a fair job done, just get a bit fed up of people trying to rip you off by telling you it needs work..when it doesn't.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Depends on the make of clutch with the car. On the citreon C1 cars they are well known for clutches to wear out after a short time. Also very expensive to replace.
I was told by a car mechanic the make of clutch was the same on other cars that use them. I am afraid some car mechanics are not honest to what parts they are using.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Well, the jobs (other than the clutch) have now been done...the bill was £84.20 which I was very pleased with at the end of the day.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Theres 'nowt' wrong with the clutch according to another garage TP, the mechanic did a test drive round in it and said it's not slipping and theres no difficulty selecting gears.
Of all the cars I've had in my time..I've yet to have a problem with clutches (and Ive had some old bangers)I remember one car I had where I carried a pair of pliers to bash the alternator with to get it started!

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
I am just waiting for the dreaded call from the garage to tell me what they've done and how much it will cost me.
Need new headlight bulb, wing mirror plus cruise-control and horn sorting out. Could be anything from £100 to £500. I bet the mechanic's rolling the dice right now! (I smashed wing-mirror going on Forum night out in a snowstorm.)
I'm sure he's ordered a new conservatory on the back of my business.

OOOOOOO I always ask how much before I say ok to the work!
If I'd have gone ahead last week without asking and getting a 2nd opinion it would have cost me just over £1K

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
Wow, I am surprised... pleasantly so!
All work done for £96 including VAT by Independent Landrover Services in Waterfoot.
Normally a wing mirror on its own costs over a ton on a Disco.
He only uses original Landrover parts and I have been going to him for years. Am well chuffed.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
I had never had much wrong with a clutch until I had a Citreon C1. Then heard about other people who had the same problems with the same model. Never have another C1 again but did see a web site about problems with this make of car. That is why I got rid of it last year Charly.
Most cars I have had over the years have been very good on the clutches. My best car I have ever had mechanical wise was a LADA RIVA CAR. It did ok until someone ran into the back of the Lada near Hollingworth Lake. Also had a good car in the old SKODA FAVORIT which I had for nearly 9 years. Though jokes were made about Skoda and Lada I never had much problems with them.

Re: Car repairs (or rip offs?)
My ex hubby drove a Lada Estate when the kids were small, we had friends living in Blackpool and stayed overnight. The next morning, someone had run into our Lada (little damage just a scuffed bumper) but a neighbour had seen who it was. He took us to the home of the culprit and we saw the car that had swiped us, it was mess, we left it at that as we chuckled our way back to our car, built like a tank they were!
