UK airspace incident.
RAF Typhoon fighter jets were alerted to a possible terrorist threat from a Pakistani aeroplane attempting to land at Manchester airport today. The RAF fighters forced the Pakistani plane out over the North Sea, then escorted it to land at the designated UK anti-terrorist airport at Stanstead, where it is being held.

Update. Pakistan International Airlines spokesman Zufiqar Bijarani said "We have been told there may have been a bomb threat."
Two men have been arrested.
The same aeroplane on the same flight , from Lahore in Pakistan to Manchester UK, was similarly diverted to Stansted on 7 September 2011, due to a bomb threat. If it's the same pilot, he will know the way now.

.
The two men who threatened to blow the plane up are British Citizens. As they were on a flight to Manchester, that might be "where they came from". So, yes they probably will be sent back there. They should be receiving a petrol bill for the Typhoon fighter jets.

British nationals of Pakistani origin , so yes maybe you are right.
Maybe they will be banned from flying then in the future ...with a bit of luck

I've just checked up and there is a difference between British citizens and British nationals, citizen have a 'right of abode' nationals do not.

Re: UK airspace incident.
What a surprise!
The passengers were quite lucky really. For a jet plane heading into a major airport, with a bomb threat and possible hijack situation on board, it would only take a few things to go wrong or be different, if the passenger jet pilot hadn't properly understood the instructions to turn back, it could have led to the plane being shot down.
These decisions have to be made quite quickly, on available information.

But from what I have understood it was the pilots who raised the alarm which lead to the scrambling of the jets. So I think there was little chance of a misunderstanding.
As I've said it was an incident that was dealt with swiftly and quickly with an arrest.

Mohammed Safdar and Tayyab Subhani say they were only joking. They were refused bail and will appear at Crown Court on August 5th.
Endangering an aircraft carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

An expensive joke for all concerned. Will they be paying the bill?

I have often wondered if, when ordered, an RAF pilot would shoot down a potentially fully loaded aircraft, perhaps 400+ people. It would take a strong person to do that.

Re: UK airspace incident.
I believe that order would come from the Prime Minister only. Only after consultation with senior Cabinet- COBRA- I believe. But thankfully this incident never came close to that as per the planes safe landing. Nor do I wish the UK would ever be faced with that choice. Only the USA (up to now ) ever had that instance with 9/11 based on what I read on that terrible day.
So hopefully the two suspects are punished accordingly in line with their crime of endangering a plane.

Re: UK airspace incident.
It's hard to believe an RAF fighter pilot faced with such a decision would have time to consult with the prime minister (especially if he is on holiday in Ibiza), and a meeting of cobra. A decision might need to be taken in less than a minute.
Shooting down a passenger jet over Manchester would cause a lot of casualties, either way, which is probably why the plane was turned back over the moors to the North Sea. All fairly routine in a way, but, if passengers are not serious about blowing up an aeroplane they must be some kind of crazy to threaten to do it.

Re: UK airspace incident.
There is a lot of silliness here.
The American administration might have shot down some of the 9/11 planes, but didn't.
You would not shoot down a plane with a bomb, you would divert it over clear space (escorted of course). You might shoot down a plane about to become a missile....

Yes of course there is a lot of silliness - but, to be nit picky, I didn't say a plane over Manchester, just making a reference. i was just pointing out my thoughts on the matter.
I'm just glad that it ended without any incident and lose of life all well that ends well. Nothing left to say really.

Re: UK airspace incident.
Terrorists do target passenger airplanes, remember the chap with the exploding underpants and the shoe bomber? All very silly and deadly.
Reports vary, some say the men forced their way into the cockpit, some that communication with the aircraft was lost for 20 minutes. All agree the men threatened to blow the airplane up with a bomb, the pilot made an emergency signal, and the RAF responded to it.
When fighter jets intercepted, the Pakistani aeroplane pilot could have had a knife at his throat, anything could have been going on. Luckily, control of the Pakistani plane remained with the pilot, and it turned away from the city as ordered to.
It will be interesting to see how seriously the court takes it. These two 'jokers' should pay the bill for the aviation fuel.

If my memory serves me right the Russians shot down a passenger airliner over their territory some twenty years ago. It was full of people but the Russians said it was a spy plane. I think it was over the island of Kamkatcha or something similar.
