Big wheel is the latest big idea!
Town centre manager Debbie O’Brien thinks a giant 'big wheel' is the answer to bring more people into Rochdale.
It is understood the wheel could cost around £30,000.

It is an ideal site for a new theatre and Arts centre. Where it is supposed to be - in the centre of the town.
Have we no vision any more. Fer Pete's sake -!!!

Good lord above, what nonsense next? Boat rides beneath the town? The view would be better!

Remember this person gets paid a substantial amount of money to dream up these things.
First metal boxes, now a large wheel. What next? Be careful what you wish for Southern Belle we may just get some rowing boats.

We will NEVER EVER get an Arts Centre Atlas. Nor we wil get anything that Rochdale needs. Just an utter joke really.
RMBC and Town Centre Management do not care for Rochdale or promoting it(unless its on a mobile phone video) in any shape or form.
Just when I thought we couldnt get any further down the joke route we get this- A WHEEL!!!.
Surly the powers that be must be getting splinters now from scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Typical negative responses to this. Well I think it's a great idea!
We could strap all our councillors into it and move it around all the borough's blackspots so that they can actually see what is happening in the town.
Site it first in one of our numerous drug-dealing hot-spots.

With a community effort, the wheel could then be pushed out of town and set rolling down the motorway? If firework rockets were attached, it would be interesting to see how far it could go. Councillors are advised to take a packed lunch.

Re: Big wheel is the latest big idea!
Has anyone asked people who used the one in Manchester if they went to Manchester especially to go on it, or if they just went on it because they were already there?
It may not have actually brought any extra people into the city centre at all.

Same could be said of the London Eye. I went there to go on it as a treat for my family. Plus also when i was in Manchester shopping as well. Great at nighttime seeing all the area light up.
But lets be honest theres far more interesting sights to see in Manchester and London. What is there in Rochdale? The Town Hall, the sunken gardens....erm the top of Toad Lane roofs? Packer Spout with the water feature wih bobbing lager cans and the drunks that hang around there? Oh some metal boxes could have been the highlight of the trip had the 'Hive' been successful. Numerous car parks and packed Metro trams heading out of Rochdale and trams packed to the rafters with tourists coming into Rochdale to travel on the Rochdale Wheel!
Like its been said get the Cllrs and their minnions up there to show them how a once great Town has been sent down the u bend on a one way trip.

Re: Big wheel is the latest big idea!
Someone gets a novelty idea. They put big wheels in city centres, e.g. London and Manchester. They sit back and collect the profits. Wait about 8-10 years whilst the novelty wears off and the wheels begin to be dismantled - such as in Manchester.
Then Rochdale gets a bright idea - have a big wheel!
The trouble is that Rochdale is not a city - it is not a new idea - the novelty has worn off - the profits have already been collected elsewhere - result Rochdale spends £30,000!
We would be laughing if we heard it was to happen elsewhere

If it was sited correctly you could view all sorts of interesting places; Emma Street, Cambridge House, Knowle View, places connected with various grooming incidents, Falinge Flats: Benefits capital UK.
All these places have been the subject of national - nay, international interest.
The dollars, yen and euros would flood in surely?
Come on Rochdalians, use your imagination. Don't sell yourselves short.
It could be a 'spanking' tourist experience!
