BBC 1 at 10.35 tonight 'Britains Hidden Hungry' follows the stories of 3 people who use the foodbank in Coventry.
The new Rochdale foodbank is due to open very soon and as a volunteer it will be interesting for me to see what it actually entails

Just watched the programme. A bit appalled by some of the benefit restrictions/ circumstance requirements. Found the bit towards the end when the reporter discovered some 'real' facts regarding one of the claiments a real downer which I can see will have negated all the good that was being done and the usual 'I told you so - set of con-merchants most of them' comment from large sections of the population. So sad really when there is quite seriously a genuine need for many.

Yes Atlas, I found that bit a lot disappointing too. I'm sure you must always get one who abuses the system but the foodbank organisers had allowed him to collect approximately £100 worth of food at a time on a regular basis without a voucher, that shouldn't happen.

The other couple with 5 children drove up in a 04/05 reg car to collect weekly groceries as though it was a supermarket, they even carried the food out to her car as she didn't like to go in!

The young girl is in the situation a lot of the young people find themselves in, they get very little, if any, support.
A job centre staff member had suggested she had a baby then she would be entitled to benefits!
By going to college to try to better her lot, she had no income from anywhere (until social services had to step in and give her £20 a week ) and not entitled to housing benefit because of her age, she had grown up in care and was trying to do something with her life. I see at the end she had started a university course, I wish her well.

Yes I also watched last night, very sad when people abuse something like this. The guy in control seemed extremely naive and got sucked in hook line and sinker, bypassing the sytems in place was foolish to say the least.

I agree with you Charly about the young lady, hope she does well.

I found the young girl's predicament an absolute disgrace. There are many genuine reasons how a young person can find themselves in such a position, and to be without some form of 'proper' support at such an age is appalling. A 'proper' means tested welfare benefit would never have allowed this 'rare' anomoly to happen. If the person is 'still' in training or education (which theoreticaly is going to benefit the 'state' in the longer run) how can it be wrong to give the minimum of support until such times as his/her age qualifies them for proper assistance? Again the law (which has been tampered with by idiots/politicians) is an ass.

Yes, a very common and normal situation, the benefits system is a bit of a mess, and that does have serious consequences for quite a lot of people.

Had a little 'in-house' training and update today, Rochdale Foodbank has been open since 1st November and I thought some of you might be interested in a few figures.

Donations of food from generous Rochdale people up to last Monday (4th March) stands at 19.75 tonnes

Food given out weighed 14.00 tonnes

We have dealt with 970 vouchers from various agencies which has enabled Foodbank to feed 1750 people which included 520 children.

Please keep the food donations coming in as the new benefit rules in April will push a lot more people below the poverty line.

There will be a collection at Tesco Rochdale store this coming Saturday 16th, even one tin or packet given can make a difference

I dont have any figures yet TP but we looked to have done well, I think we were up to 5 cages when I left about 5pm.
I'll find out more details when I go in on Thursday.
What a lot of kind and pleasant people I met on Saturday Very Happy , people who explained they themselves were on benefits but still managed to give us some food (and toilet rolls, in fact the guy went back and got us another pack when we told him we were very glad of them as its items like toiletries are always in short supply) ... there was the odd person when approached and asked if I could offer them a leaflet explaining what we were doing replied 'I'm alright' which kind of made me smile as I thought 'yes, you may be...up to now' Laughing

Perhaps you should approach Agapao International Charly?

They are probably very keen to establish their credentials in their new home town.

Update from Saturdays collection at Tesco.

Tesco add 30% to food donated which gave us 3/4 tonne in total thanks to the people of Rochdale.

Strange thing was...Tesco charged us for carrier bags to use to give the food away in, so anyone with a stash of carrier bags cluttering up a cupboard at home Foodbank would be very happy to take them off your hands Smile

http://news.uk.msn.com/uk/many-people-reliant-on-food-banks-1

I have met lots of people struggling to cope with the delay in receiving benefits and heard how its so easy for them to get into debt.
But..its not only those who are unemployed who have used the local foodbank, we now have students coming in when their bursary is late or stopped for some reason.

Read an horrendous piece in the Indie earlier in the week about ex-servicemen having to use 'em.
