Come on!!!!!

It's perhaps a miracle of sorts that he's also been able to undertake his significant Portfolio-Cabinet duties - with the responsibility for RMBC corporate services and townships.

It's feasible of course that some local activism wards off the troughs of depression that can sometimes accompany long-term sickness but, horse riding in a ' Hard-Hitting ' Western really doesn't sound very therapeutic Wink

The line between reality and fantasy was starting to get a bit blurred there, but it's coming clear now, it's all a mad dream.

I could do an alternative history of Rochdale through the ages, starting of course with the founding of the settlement by Scrotius Maximus of the XIII Legion who was tasked with building a temple honouring the Goddess Portious, deity of Famine, Plague and Desolation.

He raised his standard at the foot of what is now Drake Street, puzzled and strangely attracted by a strange smell of stale urine, ancient sweat and rancid chicken fat.

Eventually, the sense of desolation got the better of him and it is recorded that he took his own life by drinking from the as yet uncovered river whilst placed a curse on the town forever.

His son, Colinus Lambertus succeeded him but was assassinated on the steps of the forum shrieking "Lessons will be learned" in Latin as he expired.

An interesting and imaginative historical narrative, with an explanation of the long standing curse affecting the town. The idea of worship of deities of famine, plague and desolation at such an early stage in the history of the town may be discouraging to residents already struggling with the idea of an evil fairy floating over the borough, casting spells and cursing residents with less natural aptitude and skills than the rest of the country. With malevolent media sprites interfering with video editing, and worries that low budget zombie apocalypse may engulf the town, residents have enough to worry about. The alternative cowboy plot line about the last chance saloon and various tribes looking for trouble may prove more popular?

Dictata discemus ie we will learn the lessons, is the closest I can come up with. Or Lectiones discemus. The problem is that Latin has no future PASSIVE participle. I know!

Indeed, and yes, Spartacus, your statement,

"There is no evil fairy floating over the Borough casting spells on our residents and cursing them with less natural aptitude or skills than the rest of the country."

Is a fine bit of writing, well, I think so. That you should feel the need to make that information clear at all is interesting, especially as we might wonder how many people really are totally convinced by it.

Rochdale is a very interesting town. It has an intense ordinariness about it. The people seem, as you say, basically the same as anywhere else, but somehow fatalistic, as if something is or has gone wrong in the order of things which is beyond normal human intervention to put right, as if they must just accept and get on as best they can in circumstances which are at the same time intensely ordinary, and somehow limiting, rather as if evil fairy was floating over the borough casting spells on residents and cursing them with less natural aptitude or skills than the rest of the country.

A couple of hundred years ago, people in the hills around Rochdale, and a wide area beyond, believed in the existence of boggarts. These boggarts were embedded in the landscape, atattached to particular places, and interfered with human lives, causing difficulties. The boggarts vanished and faded away with the rise of mills and factories, where did they go? Do they still live on in some way?

Hinch's recent writings, quote:

"Rochdale through the ages, starting of course with the founding of the settlement by Scrotius Maximus of the XIII Legion who was tasked with building a temple honouring the Goddess Portious, deity of Famine, Plague and Desolation.
He raised his standard at the foot of what is now Drake Street, puzzled and strangely attracted by a strange smell of stale urine, ancient sweat and rancid chicken fat.
Eventually, the sense of desolation got the better of him and it is recorded that he took his own life by drinking from the as yet uncovered river whilst placed a curse on the town forever."

Carries the idea of the character and circumstance of Rochdale being a story historically concerning the river, the hill, the temple, the stale smell of burnt sacrifice etc., and a curse on the town.

All interesting, in a vague way. Each town has it's own character according to it's place in the landscape and it's past. The future shape of Rochdale will of course depend, to an extent, on it's planning, and how it is done, which brings us up to date. Smile

A true socialist to the roots. A man of real integrity.

We have not seen his like since the Vicar of Bray demonstrated his true affiliations.

To 'jump' early is to be wise of the future wherein the next round of elections for government may result in a return for Labour OR another coalition based upon Labour/Ukip -. I think the man is betting blind -. BUT he may just well be right. affraid

Is he Labour, Lib Dem or Tory? Amazingly, he's been all three!

The Vicar of Bray - Lyrics

1. In good King Charles' golden time, when loyalty no harm meant,
A zealous high churchman was I, and so I gained preferment.
To teach my flock, I never missed: Kings are by God appointed
And damned are those who dare resist or touch the Lord's annointed.

    (Chorus):

And this be law, that I'll maintain until my dying day, sir
That whatsoever king may reign, Still I'll be the Vicar of Bray, sir.

2. When royal James possessed the crown, and popery came in fashion,
The penal laws I hooted down, and read the Declaration.
The Church of Rome, I found, did fit full well my constitution
And I had been a Jesuit, but for the Revolution.

    (Chorus)

3. When William was our King declared, to ease the nation's grievance,
With this new wind about I steered, and swore to him allegiance.
Old principles I did revoke; Set conscience at a distance,
Passive obedience was a joke, a jest was non-resistance.

    (Chorus)

4. When Royal Anne became our queen, the Church of England's glory,
Another face of things was seen, and I became a Tory.
Occasional conformists base; I blamed their moderation;
And thought the Church in danger was from such prevarication.

    (Chorus)

5. When George in pudding time came o'er, and moderate men looked big, sir
My principles I changed once more, and I became a Whig, sir.
And thus preferment I procured From our new Faith's Defender,
And almost every day abjured the Pope and the Pretender.

    (Chorus)

6. The illustrious house of Hanover and Protestant succession
To these I do allegiance swear -- while they can hold possession.
For in my faith and loyalty I never more will falter,
And George my lawful king shall be -- until the times do alter.

Taken from a post on the Facebook Group site set up after the shambles of the Planning Meeting that pushed through the acceptance of the plans by the Mustafa Islamic Centre:

I have been told, that Rochdale Council and its associates, have tried to force the BBC into withdrawing future programmes on planning meetings in the Rochdale area.

Namely the forthcoming episode on the controversial Akzo Nobel in Littleborough where the council had tried to underhandedly put it through despite lack of/ potential fraudulent ground testing.

Someone else may know more on this.

Now, why does this not surprise me?!
