Just another insurance rip-off

Post  Charly on Wed Feb 27, 2013 1:41 pm

I always check around every year for car insurance, having received my renewal notice I went online and found my existing insurer ...same deal.. £25 cheaper than my renewal quote so clicked through to buy.
Checking my bank I noticed the money had not yet been taken so rang them to ask why.

The guy tried to tell me that as I was already a customer I couldnt buy at the online quote and had to pay the extra £25 as a renewal fee!
When I told him that I would take another look online as there were one or two cheaper quotes offered with other insurers he said I would have all the bother of submitting my no claims proof to a new company ect ect.
Assuring him I would find this no problem whatsoever he soon relented and said he would let me have the online quote!
Nice try pal!
Why would anyone would want to pay an extra £25 for them to renew a policy when it can be obtained cheaper with a new insurer?

So annoying!

Who were the insurers, Charly? Name them and shame them.

2. Beware renewal fees. As if things weren't bad enough, we've spotted some insurers, like Hastings Direct, levying renewal fees (some up to £50), literally charging people to stay. The only thing worse than this is that some actually pay it - worrying, as if a few insurers get away with it, the rest will follow.

Even worse are the companies that do 'automatic renewal'. There was a piece on them on R4's Money Box Live a few weeks ago. With the worst culprits it is virtually impossible to cancel your Direct Debit and they hit you with a 'leaving fee'.

Saga were very difficult to shake off. They tried to charge me £25 for correcting the spelling of my surname on the policy as they said it was my fault. I told them it was their error as I had owned the same name for 60 years and had figured out the spelling in that time.

The automatic renewal is an excuse because of the law that says all vehicles must be insured whether they are driven or not, the insurance companies are renewing for our benefit so we wont be liable to prosecution if we forget (haha)
