The Tonight Programme. Empty The Tonight Programme.

Did anyone seen the Tonight programme on ITV this evening.

It showed a family living in a council flat and you could call the home they lived in as the pits. It was damp and overcrowded. You had to see it and this was a flat rented from the council. The family who lived in it came over as quite decent and the mother had a job, but like a lot of people living on or just below the breadline as it is called.

Yet the council would prosecute a private landlord who would let a family live like this.

Also a young decent unemployed lad was shown and how hard it is to survive on the money he was on. Had qualification but finding hard to find work in the area he lived.

It is going to get worse and how have we come to this in the 21st century in the UK. I hope the politicians were watching the programme and think about those people while they are on their Easter breaks and think long and hard about the cutbacks they are planning on in the future. It will cause more poverty and hardship.

Yes T.P I watched it makes me ashamed to be British they were very genuine families in this programme and as you say we are in the 21st century and this is how our people are living and much worse to come , we still send millions abroad to China & other places who don't even want or need our help.
Yet our own are living in poverty Mad

Thursday is my day in the Foodbank as most of you will know by now, every week I come across genuine people who are in dire straights for one reason or another.
Most weeks we have someone in tears while relating their stories of how they came to be in the position they are in, some go days without anything to eat!

Yes I must admit I had tears coming to my eyes tonight while watching. Yet we see politicians going to functions and lavishing in food and travelling first class around the world and forgetting about how a lot of people are now living in this country.

If they really cared they would and should be able to stop people living like this in our country and it does show to me that they do not live in the same world as the rest of us anymore.

Shout at election time how they will stop poverty but their words mean nothing anymore.

I didn't see the programme but cannot say that I am surprised. The truth is that there will always be 'some' people who for whatever reason become almost destitute through no fault of their own. Should we as a civilised country 'allow' that to happen. NO. But to stop it happening and given the less caring society we still live in will take a very strong awakening from the rest of us and a desire (and method of intent) to 'cut up the cake' in a somewhat different manner than we do at present. Some will no doubt say - do away with 'Trident' and use that money. Others - stop foreign aid. But which of your todays politician (party) would venture such measures?? Rattling your choclate sabres won't cut it. So where do you go from there???

Well, as a start, Jeanie could cancel her subs to the Tory party. Everyone knows it is going to get worse but the Tories are pressing ahead regardless despite the fact that their measures will push hundreds of thousands if not millions into appalling poverty.

There are plenty of compassionate people in the party who must be very deeply concerned at what is happening.

I know that cracking down on fraud and scroungers is a popular measure but so many working families are being forced to supplement their incomes by queuing up in the food banks.

It isn't right and I can't see Labour coming up with anything substantially better.

The Coalition made up of the Tories and Lib Dems are a political party that has values. Make the rich richer and the poor poorer and take us back to the same sort of values that happened in the Victorian times. Squalid housing and people starving and working for pittance. This is the road we are going down.

Indeed gentlemen. There are however less draconian measures all and any party could take to lessen the burden on the remaining tax-payers who fund our social state by agreeing that equity and balance is far more likely to benefit all and ultimately produce more wealth as people come to realise the 'state' is doing that which the majority want and approve of and in consequence make stride towards. We are in an age where carrot and stick is considered 'old hat'. Today it is more a 'sugar and pat'. They could start by doing that which we have mentioned time and time again on this forum - tighten up the tax rules to the 'smart guys' and relax some to the 'tryers'. Bring in larger tax thresholds for the 'fat cat salaried' (in order to stop their fiddling on the bonus system) and blow-out those companies who won't play ball. That alone would produce over a £100billion per year. And all without alienating the majority of the people and making sure they get credit (plus the votes). It's not rocket science. - But then again nobody said politicians were the brightest of people. Rolling Eyes
