Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
Does anyone have a clue how supermarkets arrive at their prices?
Last Wednesday, I bought a litre of Famous Grouse from Tesco. Cost: £14.00 (This is unusually cheap as it can cost you about £24.00 in an off license.
The day after, it went up massively to £16.50
On Saturday; up to and including today, it has come down slightly to £16.00
Can anyone explain why? After all, it is not as if it is getting close to a sell-by date. If anything, spirits improve with age.
It seems bonkers to me. I know that some supermarkets have been shown to artificially raise prices just before Xmas so that in Xmas week, they can put a sticker on proclaimin "£3.00 off!"
I will be keeping a close eye on my favourite mid-week blend over the coming months.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
Maybe they were trying to see if the £16-50 price was selling well enough, when it was seen as not doing, they thought knocking 50p off might bring more sales. Indeed they do put prices up and then bring them down again to show a discount.

or better still I'd rather suck a strawbwerry lolly. They would do better to put 'them' all across a moorland heath and shoot at them and leave the 'real' ones alone.

A couple of weeks ago Asda were selling Baileys at a tenner, went back next day for another bottle, £15 again. when I asked about this, I was told they only had so many in at that price and when they were gone, the newer stock was the old price!!

Supermarkets are fighting for custom which makes this governments agreement to cuts price alcohol a down right joke !
I got a bottle of Sherridan's for £11.45 normally £15 yesterday in my local supermarket and 20 cans of Strongbow for £12
Well impressed

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
Has anyone tried Tesco's 'own-brand' vintage champagne at £20.00? Thinking of getting some but I ain't tried it. Some of the cheap champagnes are way over-dry but are ok for making kir royale's or champagne cocktail... as long as you put two lumps of brown sugar in the glass rather than one.
My home-brewed Australian stout tastes fab but will be even better for New Year. Am starting to brew 3 gallons of Woodforde Headcracker barley wine next weekend but am going to try to leave it for 3 months. At 7% it should be very interesting!
Perhaps a representative from RMBC might pop round with a nice malt whisky for my sterling work for RO's excellent 'Council Watch'? If so, I will get Mrs H to taste it first.
Well, you can't be too careful these days.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
Ah yes Tesco the shoppers friend! It is bad enough these examples of price hike on booze and such but when they do it on staple foods it is beyond Matron’s dander, “The robin B’s are at it again” echoes around after each visit.
Talking of Barley Wine Hinch that is Matron’s favourite drink, gold label, so expecting invite to sample in new year.
On the topic we had one of those vouchers from RB’s a fiver off if you spend 40 quid on one item. Off we go for 32 cans of Gold Label to find only 6 on the shelf. Yes you’ve guessed it ‘sorry there’s none in the back’ and as if by magic when the date for the offer was up loads of cans on the shelf. There loss, Asda was selling cheaper and free bus ride made it worth it.
Can someone explain why a Warburton loaf is 7 shillings (35p for young uns) cheaper at Aldi than at RB’s please?
And for vintage RO posters don’t mention tinned tomatoes.

This thread has been edited to stop it wandering off at a tangent.
Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
Latest from Robin B’s, Tesco.
Matron priced spaghetti, dry, yesterday for our food bank contribution, it has gone up 10 pence when she went down to buy today. How can these superstores get away with this kind of usury? When are we going to just put things back on the shelf if the price is so obviously randomly increased.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
If sufficient people did that, within days the price would be reduced again - until the next time. Every item on the shelves is carefully scrutinized for uptake and the price varied accordingly to produce the best profit margins overall.
It isn't done to 'help' you 'not spend'. Quite the reverse.
The prices of all grain items will steadily increase over the next few months as the bad harvests across the globe take effect with the highest prices coming along next spring. I doubt Old Regulator that you will see any reductions for the forseeable future. Best buy and stock up now - if you can.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
I bet they don't sell many anyway this month as people are still drinking their way through the stuff they got at Christmas. They probably think that they may as well make as much as possible on the ones they do sell.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
I think it goes deeper than this DL and would go as far to say that I think it is all part of a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
I have seen stickers saying that a particular product was sold at £X.XX between the periods oif A and B which suggests that prices are manuipulated in order to herald a 'big price drop' when in fact, the price was artificially increased at a time of slow sales in order to stretch the truth later on.
Dixons got done for this years ago but were amazingly blatant about it. They had one outlet somewhere in South London where they sold everything at top dollar with no reductions. This enabled them to put the same goods on display at their other 600 stores claiming 50% off on the basis that they had been sold at one of their stores for the higher price.
I think that they got a large fine at the time and the law was strengthened in this area yet deliberate manipulation continues.
Luckily, between my ongoing flu and my cannyness in stocking up at the Christmas rate of £16,00 per litre, I should have enough to last me until Easter when it will undoubtedly be on sale at £16.00 again.

Re: Grouse-Watch: Supermarket pricing
A very strange thing happened to me today. I was out on a pastoral visit when a Grouse rose in front of me from a very unexpected direction. It flew up from underneath a kitchen sink!
Luckily for me, I had the presence of mind to grasp it firmly by the neck and stuff it in my game bag.
Never seen one nesting in such an amazing place before.

Seeing it all at the moment Hinch. A pig one week and a grouse this week. Grab them fast enough and it will save on your shopping bill.

I am in no position to comment on that Hinch. I do see a lot of Grouse in stores on my shopping trips. The one on the whisky bottle in the booze section.
