No 1 Riverside: Have a good giggle
In a media release the Council refers to the new council building as...
the iconic Number One Riverside building
I kid you not, ICONIC

They mustn't have looked up the meaning of the word before using it, probably thought it sounded good

It is iconic. How pathetic. Anyone who thinks it is iconic should go to Specsavers.
Also take note at the area that it was built. One of the gateways into the town centre. So they build it so high you cannot see St, Chads Church or the clock to the town hall. Two of our famous landmarks in to the town centre.
Very bad planning I would have thought.

That means the Black Box is one of the 7th wonders of the modern world.

I know it is not fashionable to think it; let alone say it but I think it is a very attractive piece of architecture. The word 'iconic' is overused but I've seen far uglier buildings described thus... such as College Bank flats.
Certainly far more attractive than that which stood on the site before.

I dont know....the Church that stood there was pleasing on the eye.
The old electric house fitted in the area. Oh wait that was on the site of the bus station being built now.

The front where it curves in line with the river has its merits but looking from Entwistle Road it looks like the Berlin Wall!Hinch wrote:I know it is not fashionable to think it; let alone say it but I think it is a very attractive piece of architecture.
But iconic it is not from any view.

Re: No 1 Riverside: Have a good giggle
I never thought that the 'Leckie House' or the Christian Science Church were particularly attractive.
The front and much of the interior of the Town Hall is iconic sure enough but the back looks as if it was designed and built by that well known firm, Botchitt & Scarper.
I think that the Smith Street area has always been pretty uninspiring and Riverside has lifted a long neglected area. The Yelloway depot was an eyesore for years and the old warehouses on Slack Street and perhaps the Co-op slaughterhouse were the best of a bad lot.
The new Town Square could host some great events if it stays away from the Peppa Pig and z-lister event type stuff.
As for you J, you have only yourself to blame. It was your photos of Riverside that got me thinking perhaps we had got something worthwhile.

J: How about some panorama photos from the Entwistle Road viewpoints offered then !
It is shown as being one of the TOWN JEWELS in this week's quaint local Saturday newspaper.

Re: No 1 Riverside: Have a good giggle
Apparently the Towns Jewels have been spent on the Councillors lounge in this new build which I have been informed "no expense spared" so maybe we need some inside photos ?
I must agree coming down Entwistle Road this new build just blocks out our beautiful Town Hall and everything else and why have our services not been brought together under this over sized new build ? they are still spread out all over the Borough when empty spaces exist within

I agree that this building, viewed from Entwistle Road, is certainly not 'iconic'! the view of the Town Hall is totally obscured by this building from this side of the town.

The word ICON does not mean a thing of beauty.

Views differ as to whether the building is ugly or not but either way what it is most certainly not is iconic.

Re: No 1 Riverside: Have a good giggle
The Marmite jar and the Coca Cola bottle are described as iconic these days as is the Bush radio. I think that the word has somehow lost its way.
My favourite Rochdale building was the old Lancashire and Yorkshire railway station with the wooden clock tower plus St John's Church and the fire station.

Ok, I admit. This is the iconic building that Rochdale really needed as it's power-base for its current 'Dark Lord'.

So could we request some inside photos of this so called "iconic" building just to see how well our money has been spent ? loads of photos of the lovely lite up outside but nothing showing us within this icon ?

Personally, Jean, I think the inside looks superb, much better than the outside. I do though wonder at the conspicuous extravagance of the interior given the austerity we are currently experiencing and the relative hardship many families in the borough have to endure.

Definitely not iconic.
I like the building though. Anything is an improvement on the Black Box.
Hope it's self-cleaning glass.

Lot of dead space in there. Looks like a statement rather than a way of efficiently housing and using council officials.

Mmm, I agree.
Perhaps it could be the showground for council, and all of its Partners of course, to perform their overdue “Gangnam Style” establishment video … for the ‘I Love Rochdale’ campaign and general borough PR.
There looks to be an extravagant "arena" for a mass dose of Gangnan Style ridicule. Could a revival routine for the so-fatigued dance style be fronted inside there by a Leader, or a leading Cllr, or …
I've heard that vertigo has been experienced from the building's interior design.

Re: No 1 Riverside: Have a good giggle
Spare places for the homeless of Rochdale. Well the council might as well seeing as though they have helped out in the latest rounds of cutbacks. After all they might as well use the extra space for something rather than wasting money showing off on all the useless propaganda they are wasting money on.
