Universal credit Empty Universal credit

Universal credit is being introduced today in Oldham, Ashton and surrounding areas.
It is starting with single jobless.
I find a LOT of our 'clients' at the foodbank are in this category, they are the ones who get the least help and they are the last on the list for housing, those that DO have properties are now also having to pay a bedroom tax if they live in more than a bedsit or 1 bed property, thats in addition to any rent they have to pay to top up their housing benefit , problem is..there isnt enough 1 bed properties to go round and older people are also being penalised for extra bedrooms when there is nowhere to downsize to......plus an amount towards community charge..it seems unfair they are targeted all the time.
The move to monthly payments will also cause hardship I fear, as a months money all at once will be more difficult for hard-up people to manage.
If this government got its head from up its askwith it would realise there aren't enough jobs for these young people and get started on a bigger better apprenticeship scheme or something.

I wonder what happened to all those apprentices in the 1980s when the wholesale closure of manufacturing was the way to ‘break the unions?

Again I blame all parties for this.

Read Max Weber on the ‘standing army of unemployed’ to better understand the economics of capital, he is an American by the way.

I am quite bemused by this. When the government it crackdown on what it called 'scroungers' and the 'vast army 'of 'benefit cheats', much of the country at large was broadly in favour.

Now that the realities of what this could actually mean hit home, the public mood is changing. There are simply not enough jobs for people to take up and of those that there are, many are so low paid as to offer no solution. There is no dignity in labour whatsoever if you are not able to pay the rent and feed and clothe your family. Rushing home from work to pick up your groceries from the foodbank is degrading and demeaning though they do a fantastic and much-needed job.

I too read Weber Frank and his views are as relevent today as they were when he put pen to paper.

The welfare cuts will do nothing to address the issues. They will make it even harder for the low paid and those in genuine need to survive. The cheats will always find a way od 'dodging the column'. Every time that IDS speaks out on the issues he just reminds us how out of touch he and others of his class are with the realities of day to day life for millions of us. Be on the alert for ex-public schoolboys offering simple solutions to complex problems WHATEVER PARTY THEY HAIL FROM.

There will be more homeless people on the streets, more foodbanks and more boarded up properties. Is this what we really want?

Labour, of course, are coming up with no credible alternative.

I note with no sense of surprise that the Bangladesh rag trade has major share holders in, wait for it, the government. A spokes person states that if 2 pence was added to the cost of a £4 T shirt the mother who makes them in Asia would be able to feed her children properly. Mind you if the mother went on strike there is always a few thousand to take her job from the ‘standing army’. Oh well cheap clothes are okay as long as the share holders turn away from the reality.

I thought you might show a bit more sympathy for the shareholders OR!

Because of their sight problems, they can only read the bottom right hand corner of the page.
