Real gypsies

Post  Hinch on Fri May 10, 2013 4:12 pm

Reminded me of this when I asked if Jeanie made her own clothes pegs on another thread.

We were at Salthouses in Norfolk on our Spring break and saw a very tidy touring caravan drawn up by the salt marsh. It was occupied by a nice family of gypies. The had a board outside offering home-made clothes pegs for sale, dried wild-flowers, fortune telling with tea-leaves, pot-mending and scissor and knife-sharpening.

They were there for several days. A sight rarely seen these days.

Nice to see folk pursuing their traditional lifestyle.

Their halting-site was immaculate. No hint of litter or piles of smouldering rubbish.

Travelling folk often get a bad press and in many cases, deservedly so but it just goes to show that you can't judge everyone as if they were the same.

I learned that the family had once been water-gypsies working the coal barges in the Midlands but the work had disappeared in the late 60's and they had tried living in a house for a year or two before buying a van and taking to the road.

I'll talk to anyone I will!

This chat about sticking pins in dolls and reversing curses wouldn't have anything to do with stereotype ideas about Gypsies would it?
