I sense a 'pause' - for reflection?

Post  Atlas on Tue Jun 18, 2013 1:31 am

The forum's moaners ( erm - disgruntled) have eased off quite considerably in recent weeks. Perhaps they have all been watching some 'world' affairs and have realised that their particular 'problems' are but nothing when compared with 90% of others 'out there''?? Nice to know one is in the 'cosseted' zone.WinkWinkSmile

I think their spleens have been vented for now, Atlas. Just waiting for a re-pressure to be complete.

Ah but Atlas surely one persons problem may seem trivial to others but immense to the person handling that problem.

Deadlock over Pennines Township “ chief “

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/showdown-meeting-bid-break-deadlock-4390802

Remember councillor Aftab Hussain and his good ‘character reference,’ that was presented in court early last year for one of the men found guilty at the Liverpool Crown Court child Grooming/Rape Trial ?

There could be a measure of arrogance / indifference running, in that the display of judgement shown at that time by Cllr Hussain is apparently now immaterial: - he sees justification for himself being made the Pennine Leader for yet a further year.

Before anyone jumps in with perhaps an authoritarian, sage-like lecture about 'Lessons Learnt,' or some such tripe, I’d suggest the role of Township Chair should be about public credibility, objective ‘presence,’ obvious competences in literacy and numeracy, strong public speaking skills and proven experience to co-ordinate across local party politics for the diverse needs, care and business of the township.

Hopefully, as a Forum, Rochdale Talk can also be an avenue to express and extend debate on borough issues, whether they are seen as palatable or not

Absolute spot on. In the past Chairs of Townships have always been moved round to all party's regardless who was / is in power this position should be non political.   Sadly the attitudes of Cllr Hussain has shown this not to be any more,  which is very sad for the Township and the community he supposedly represents !

Why?  As you have agreed.  Different issues mean different levels of pressure/concern to each person.

Some people care deepely about Green Issues for example..  But some people may have more pressing needs.  Yes Green issues may be very important and releavent, but cleary priorties take over.

Of course some posters concerns pale into insignificance when compared with 'world' events.  But, last time I looked, the Forum was named ROCHDALE TALK.....perhaps it should be changed to WORLD TALK eh? Mad

Anyone is entitled to an opinion. They call it freedom of speech.

Freedom to voice an opinion - indeed - but not anything beyond that. Freedom of speech or 'to say what you like' has limitations across every country on the globe as many 'prisons' across the globe bear witness.Wink

Even expressing an opinion can be slanderous, libellous or sacrilegious and leave you open to civil or criminal action or both.

You can hold an opinion on any subject you like but expressing it needs extreme caution or very deep pockets unless you are an MP speaking under parliamentary privilege or are a participant in legal proceedings speaking in open court although even the latter can leave you open to perjury under certain circumstances.

The right to free speech is a misnomer and the UK has some of the toughest defamation laws in the western world which is why litigants often flock to this country to sue. Many libel cases routinely heard in the UK would not get off the starting blocks in the USA.

Read Geoffrey Robertson QC's excellent book, 'Media Law' for greater insights.

That could depend on who you are and who your friends are too!
Sometimes people can be labelled unjustly but it sticks and the person slandered, labelled/libelled cant do anything about it.

Even voicing an opinion can be slanderous Atlas if it it holds the person referred to in ridicule, contempt or disrepute.

As for you Charly, I have been labelled many things in my life; sometimes fairly, sometimes less so. Have been accused of being a racist, sexist and homophobic by forum members but it's water off a duck's back. Tells you far more about the accuser than the accused. I know what I am and that is all that matters.

When I left Pennine, someone spread a totally false rumour that it was because they found porn on my works PC. It suited the management and others to neither confirm or deny. One version even had me being taken from my office in handcuffs! It hurt at the time but life's too short.

As for brown-nosers, not sure what you mean.

Re: I sense a 'pause' - for reflection?

I had a similar experience Hinch when I left the railway (after 18 years) in 1999. Somebody spread a rumour I had embezzled £74,000 and been fired - neither of which was true. The sum involved turned out to be £7.40p which had come to light on a five year accounting exercise after my departure (an accounting error on one of the receipts I had entered). And yes it does hurt at the time but such are the machinations of our fellow humans. 11 years later I was asked to return a.s.a.p. as the railway was on the verge of failure. Many would have said 'up yours' - but then that would have only compounded the rumour-mongers schemes. It took two years to get the place back on track (oops - pun - not intended) and is now on the verge of a new and exciting foray with new partners into a massive redevelopment programme which should see its future secure for at least the next 20 years. It's now on the road to becoming one(if not the) biggest tourist attraction in this area of Wales. Strange how bad things can often turn out for the good in the end. But as you say - that's life - and boy is it too short.
Yes opinion can often get you hung just as easily as the spoken or written word. One should always draw breath and click brain in gear FIRST.WinkVery Happy;)

I must admit Atlas, it is nice when the worm turns.

I resigned completely under my own volition from Pennine, having gone above my statuary pension age after they said that they were going to discipline me over something I wrote in my trade union mag that they felt was less than complimentary to some of the directors and senior managers.

My magazine had won the coveted Best Trade Union Newsletter in Britain award plus 2 other major awards in successive years! One amusing allegation centred around a few anagrams I did of various senior directors names! It seems that my ironic sense of humour was not entirely welcome.

6 months later, they were somehow caught on the back foot when I walked into the board room as an accredited reporter for Rochdale Online, sat down at the press bench, looked them squarely in the eye and started scribbling.

A sweet moment indeed.

All water under the bridge now. I was also accused of fiddling my union expenses but was speedily and completely exonerated after an investigation.

Needless to say, had there been the slightest truth whatsoever in any of these rumours and allegations, I would not be putting them online.

Yes Hinch. If the 'barstewards' can't get you one way they will always try another. It just goes to show how petty-minded and ignorant they all are. Envy drives a lot of people. I have had two recent incidences of this type of childish stupidy and both from middle-aged people who one would have thought should know better. I despair sometimes at the way some people brains are wired up. It goes to show just how 'infantile' our species still is and why we have constant warfare and destruction of our own environment around us all the time. 'Mankind' !!! That's a laugh.Sad I don't know where the 'kind' comes in.Rolling Eyes

Yes teamplayer - however - being out of it doesn't solve anything nor does it seem to change anything. The next batch of lunatics are already in place and are already spreading their poison to oust others who they deem 'unworthy'. Anyone would think 'position' and 'influence' benefits the holder. I can assure you it doesn't as they themselves will find in due course. It's a sad cess-pit out there. What a Face
