Use it or lose it
There are currently, according to the stats, 91 users on this site - of which currently 5 are regulars.
Today - none.
The owners of the site would be fully justified in removing the site due to the 'lack of interest' or apathy or whatever it is that doesn't appeal to the remaining 86. Is Rochdale so uninteresting as to warrant such a poor show? Or perhaps because this site allows you more freedoms to express your true feelings without sanctions being slapped at you every few posts?
You don't appreciate what you have here - and if you lose it you will deserve to. Welcome to only 'positive' 'yes men' sites. And the best of luck. Disgusted of Wales.

Funny you should mention the de-facto positive sites. i was just discussing this with a friend over a recent incident on FB about positve only. As in I'm being targetted by a few people as I dont tow the positive only mantra and getting quite a few comments over how I take to task the everything is rosy brigade. Such as being branded dis loyal for shopping elsewhere for things I need. Notably by one person who got quite in my face at every chance about how proud he was of his home town. Only ever shopped in Rochdale so on and so forth. But then that very same person started promoting his business . Except he was opened in BLACKBURN!!!! Nothing against a sucessful business. But clearly a case do as I say not as I do. Hypocrite.
TBH one thread made me really angry. But I digress. I dont know if you know my real name over on FB or not Atlas. But you can clearly see i don't go down that route with my posts. So I'm now Mr Negative for saying we cant move on without resolving issues, I'm also shocked at certain attempts to drive positve only threads with bribes of so called Art to be awarded. Suffice to say, I didn't take part and actually reported certain parts of the thread to the Mod. I've left a site already. So yes, this site does offer a more open source, but then again I will post what I want and how I want on threads I see on FB.
I use this thread, as and when I can. Majority of what I post on FB is via my phone as it passes the time whilst I'm parked up or having my lunch.
Clearly you are passionate. So start promoting it etc.

Re: Use it or lose it
Good posts and good points. Admin is aware of the disappointingly low number of posts and is currently actively looking at an alternative format and outlet for all things Rochdale to be discussed, debated and shared. THIS WILL NOT RESULT IN YET ANOTHER FACEBOOK SITE. THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY ALREADY. Virtually all of these sites are fansheets with any real debate being stifled, posters banned for sod all and any questioning of the status quo resulting in the poster being described as 'negative,' or being suspended. Oh yes, Admin watches what is going on.
I cannot say more at the moment, but plans are receiving attention and our remaining loyal posters will not be disappointed with the results. If you would like to be involved in some way, please PM me at Admin. We are particularly keen to attract writers of all sorts and those who want to see all shades of opinion being valued.
Thanks for your forbearance and continued support.Re: Use it or lose it
I will admit to being more of a lurker than a poster. However, I take the view that I'm not going to post unless I can actually contribute -and in a lot of cases there's nothing I can really add to the threads that hasn't already been said.
Re: Use it or lose it
It's a shame, I would be sorry to see this forum closed.
Having said that, I must confess that I have very recently joined a Facebook site.
Not out of spite, but out of sheer boredom, as this Forum seems to have lost so many contributors that I needed to look for something else whilst at the same time contributing to this one

Usually, if you say something on this forum, someone will have something to say in response, which can be interesting.
It is noticeable, and a bit puzzling though, that people who live outside the town seem more interested in Rochdale than the people who do live there. What is the explanation for that ?

Re: Use it or lose it
Well done everyone. And so positive. Great.
I suppose we 'elopers' do have a more 'rosy' idyll of the town, as memories are often of the better times one has had other than the 'rough' - and Rochdale in my day was 'quite' 'shabby and rough'. That's the only excuse I have really. One cannot dump one's beginnings if one has spent a childhood in a place. It's like elastic. It keeps drawing you back. Strange that -.
I hope Admin has some success with a new format and some new ideas. For myself, who only takes to the keys and this one site every day for an hour, I like what we already have but would appreciate change if it helps things along.'
My only complaint has been that it is often 'too parochial' - silly really because I suppose it is supposed to be just that?I like discussion on everything from pot holes on Albert Royds Street to rubbish dumps in the Rio De Janeiro fellhalas to Mars Explorer to the Higgs Boson particle and wouldn't mind one bit if someone posted on those subjects. Let's face it - if there isn't sufficient local news to keep everyone active - then branch out. The more the merrier.
Meantime. Thanks for the replies. Fingers crossed and all that.

Not so strange really, fairly normal, especially for those who go to live in another country, where people look different, live in a different landscape, act different, speak a different language, have different religion, habits, clothes, food, traditions, calendar of events and a different history.

As you've wrote that you live in Todmorden, perhaps you would like to share your own explanation to help with our own better understandings ?
Posts show you've no in-depth, front line awareness of various neighbourhoods, areas and resident customs over time, rarely come here, yet have such an interest in Rochdale, with more or less daily forum commenting .. is this from pre-retirement employ ? Being a long-term, maps-superfluous, born and bred Rochdalian, I'm a bit puzzled by your notable interest. Would you care to explicate, ... a bit ....

Re: Use it or lose it
I gather you find my interest in Rochdale rather suspicious, Mojo. If you imagine me as a secret member of some strange political group, no, I'm not.
I'm sympathetic towards and interested in Rochdale, because of where I was brought up, in several of the old cotton mill towns in and around Manchester. I'd rather be a voice from the edge of things, as I am, but the snag here really is how little people from Rochdale are using the forum. Yes, I'm retired, and have a bit of spare time each day, especially in the winter.

Re: Use it or lose it
Talking of residents customs over time. I lived on Hope Street (Falinge Flats now). Picture 4 long rows, about 50 houses in each, stretching from Falinge Road through to Whitworth Road with alleys, courts and ginnels and cobbled streets dissecting all. It's gas lit. One lamp every 100 yards. It's dirty with dust and soot from the two cotton mills towards the far end and the foundry and the scrap yard. Small area of common, areas where previous homes have fallen down (note not demolished for slum clearance), three in all dot the area.
That was home. One up one down. Tub toilet etc etc etc. So what was the local custom? Gouging out the gas tar from between the cobbles and pretending it was chewing gum. Result - black teeth and a clout around the ear-hole. Not I hasten to add because our teeth were black. No. It was a criminal offence to remove the tar from between the cobbles and the coppers might have caught us. Hey lass tha's none lived.

Re: Use it or lose it
Have just left the Rochdale's Future page on Facebook run by Greg Couzens for reasons that Chill has referred to. We were having a discussion about the type of walling around the reopened river; concrete, stone, glass or railings. All very positive but by merely holding a discussion, we were accused of negativity.
Bloody typical Rochdale.
Whatever happens to the shape of the forum Admin, NEVER allow it to get like that one.

Re: Use it or lose it
Rochdale Future? Facebook Group is a very scary place. I joined it about three weeks ago and some mornings when I log in, it resembles the "Night Of The Long Knives". It should really be renamed the "Rochdale's vent your historical political grievance in a public forum group". Despite newbies like myself, who keep chirping up, "Can we keep this on topic please, i.e Rochdale's future" it soon descends into farce again.
Rochdale, Past & Present on the other hand is a super facebook group. Great for taking a trip down memory lane.
Back to this forum- let's hope some regular posters come back soon. Perhaps promote this forum by allying it to one of the friendly Rochdale facebook groups? Do the admin here know the admin of such groups to make a pact?

Very generous Hinch, Atlas and A.N. Other. Nothing like putting your money where your mouth is. Any more offers? No sum too small and I know that we live in difficult economic times. All offers very greatly appreciated and we are happy to receive anonymous donations. We will provide all our sponsors with a full statement showing exactly how their money has been spent.
Re: Use it or lose it
1. Received £40 this morning from Atlas plus another equal sum from Hinch. Thanks to both.
2. Contacted a local company by email three days ago to design a logo for the new site. They are based in Falinge. Not even had an acknowledgement. Is this NFR? (Normal for Rochdale) do any of you know a reliable company; preferably local, who would be willing to do this and take good cash money in return?

I too had bad experiences with local companies with requests for products. Mine was for printed merchandise. I sent out numerous emails to all the companies I could think off. All but one didnt answer. The one that did promised to send out brochures, still waiting. One other company I went to was closed during stated opening hours.
So I had no choice but to go elsewhere such as Oldham. Suppliers there were falling over themselves to help!
Don't companies in Rochdale need business as they are that busy?!

Oh silly me Hinch. Thanks for your pointer
Silly me for stating the truth of what happend to me and Admin in their cases.
My rose tinited glasses just need a bit of tweaking. Thats better. Rose tint turned to 11 - the level required on most FB sites.
Oh yes I can see clearly now . Everything is fine.

Now just keep repeating the mantra over and over...
"There are no problems here. Everything is fine. It's time to move on. "
There now, you're back in the room.

Re: Use it or lose it
Well, Rochdale's loss is California's gain. Placed an order, half the price, they rung me immediately and are working on it as we speak. I always buy local as long as the service is good and I'm happy with the price. These days, the least you can do is to set your system to send out an aknowledgement and thank you for placing your order.
Re: Use it or lose it
When I moved from the cities, Manchester and Liverpool, out into the hinterland of smaller Lancashire towns, at first it was quite noticeable that everything, say getting a carpet put down for instance, took a day or two before it could start to be arranged, then a time would be appointed about a week later for it to happen, then it would be delayed due to something or other and start to happen a few days after that. Total time delay between a week and a fortnight. I realised this is normal timing on most things, not actually a delay as such. Perfectly ok once you know what to expect.
The map of this part of the world could be broadly divided into two time regions (with a very wiggly line), 'modern' time for some 'bigger' places and a few days later for most other places. When you have lived in one of those time zones for a few years, the pace seems entirely normal, but they are distinct.
