Post  Jeanie Thu Jun 20, 2013 10:25 pm

I think it is disgraceful how arrogant Cllr Hussain is, and that he thinks he should take chair simply because they are the ruling party this is not what Townships or being a Councillor is about.

In the past it has always been shared between all 3 parties regardless of who was in power as this post is supposed to be non-political sadly it has become very political which is sad for the Pennines and sad for the borough as power seems to have gone to their heads rather than working for the community.
And no I don't miss the nastiness of it TP I just hope lessons have been heard & learnt from the past elections and future voting systems are more closely monitored.

We really do need more young people involved on the council if it is to move forward in the Rochdale Borough who won't put up with this nonsense and continue wasting public money and are there because they genuinely do care .Crying or Very sad

Being Chair is a very influential position and needs good people skills and a deft touch. It is natural that the party in power would want to fill these posts.

Important points for Shefali Begum and others to note:-

1. A good chair tends to be the one who speaks least and uses their skills to ensure the free flow of discussion and debate.

2. As chair, your authority comes from your ability to inspire and gain respect, not from your tendency to bully, over-ride or dismiss the views of those you do not agree with. You are not a school teacher in charge of a group of unruly children.

Cecile Biant also poor in my view in her role as Chair of Rochdale Township. Have seen her stand and stamp her foot in an attempt to restore order. I think she used to be a teacher.

Ian Duckworth has her measure and knows which buttons to press.

Her angry interjections of "You will be quiet when the chair is on her feet" butters no parsnips with Ian!

In the traditional role of chair, as Hinch says, "your authority comes from your ability to inspire and gain respect, not from your tendency to bully, over-ride or dismiss the views of those you do not agree with."

Electability as a councillor comes from getting things done that your electorate want doing. Bullying, over-riding and dismissing the views of those who do not agree is one way to do that. Seems to work in planning.

Yes. Compare and contrast the style of Cllr Begum as seen in the Planners programme with the quiet, thoughtful, principled attitude of Cllr Billy Sheerin.

The chairmanship of Planning is a BIG job, often carried out in an atmosphere of strongly opposing points of view  and should never go to a new councillor in their first year in office.

Zero points to the person who put her into this key post.

Councillors are interesting as I learned in the protest re the Broad Lane redevelopment issue. They want to be everyone's friend plus be Man of the People yet still be 'on message' politically.

Very amusing watching them changing hats and covering their backs. And no... I am not mixing my metaphors.

On the Broad Lane issue, they dug a hole for themselves then had to crawl of of it whilst struggling to maintain some pretence of dignity.

Why there’s been a rehash debate of con Shefali Ahmed’s committee roles seems a bit confusing: - she has recently been promoted, twice, following her stint and style as the televised Chair of a Planning Committee

She is now Rochdale’s Assistant Cabinet Member/Portfolio Holder for Place & Regulation and the Chair of Rochdale Township Action and Resources Committee !  Surprised

The title of this thread is Pennine Township, which has been a Chair-less entity since May, until this week, due to a protracted LEADER deadlock.

I “reflected” on the subject before but on another topic: -

Mojo Hill wrote:
Deadlock over Pennines Township “ chief “

Remember councillor Aftab Hussain and his good ‘character reference,’ that was presented in court early last year for one of the men found guilty at the Liverpool Crown Court child Grooming/Rape Trial ?

There could be a measure of arrogance / indifference running, in that the display of judgement shown at that time by Cllr Hussain is apparently now immaterial: - he sees justification for himself being made the Pennine Leader for yet a further year.

Before anyone jumps in with perhaps an authoritarian, sage-like lecture about 'Lessons Learnt,' or some such tripe, I’d suggest the role of Township Chair should be about public credibility, objective ‘presence,’ obvious competences in literacy and numeracy, strong public speaking skills and proven experience to co-ordinate across local party politics for the diverse needs, care and business of the township.

Hopefully, as a Forum, Rochdale Talk can also be an avenue to express and extend debate on borough issues, whether they are seen as palatable or not

Does one ponder further psycho-babbles of local rights, powers .. ?

Councillor Aftab Hussain is yet again the nominated LEADER, The Chair of Pennine Township, for the next 12 months,
decided by a vote of six to five at a specially-convened meeting due to the absence of one councillor.

The resolution has been described as leading to ' soured relations ' at least in and round this important Township committee.

Strange; I've just read our perennial police and public sector-led Razzmatazz, somewhere else, about Rochdale's strong community cohesion and relations.

There should be "a vote of no confidence" made against this as soon as possible.

It is about time Councillors started representing the people they were elected to represent, not just lining their pockets!

Pennine Township Empty Re: Pennine Township

Post  teamplayer2 Sat Jun 29, 2013 2:08 pm

Yes Keith I have to agree. The way everything has gone here in the township I think a vote of no confidence should be held. The chairman should be shared as before and I think the best person who could or should have the Chair is Andrew Kelly. He may be the minority political party but at least it would be a fair choice.

At least then the Pennine Township would not be then dominated by one single party. The issues concerning the township would be more political rather for the good of the people of the Pennine area.

Why would Labour not agree to share the chair each year so as to be seen to be fair rather than political.

That is what they use to do. So why are Labour being like this? As Jeanie said to me once we need more young people to serve on the council. To me at least new faces. If this is not another reason to show why then help us in the Pennine Township and the rest of Rochdale.

All this politics is not doing us much good and I would like the people of the township to show there feelings about it. I use to go to the meetings on occasions, but in this case I would like to be one of the dissenting voices on how choices are made and the selection of the chair at the Pennine Township. The way of sharing the position was much better, but if the Councillors cannot handle it then let the ordinary people who attend the meetings vote on the choice.

Or better still have a selection of people who are prepared to stand as individuals in the council and care more about the Pennine Area of the town and not the childish scoring political points we have at the moment.

Labour have got it all wrong on they way the choice has been made and should have shared like it use to be. Labour is not the party they once were and do they really represent the majority of people who matter. The Voters.

Well I for one would be more than happy to put a Vote of no confidence in the Chair, he can't possibly think he is right to write a letter to defend a paedophile publicly and expect to represent a township ? what nonsense is this coming to and what does it show to our younger generation Shocked

Only by fighting for a change, to fairness and a voice for all, can you possibly hope to win this one. No 'power' structure seeking to enhance its control is going to give way on 'pleas' to their better nature. They don't possess one in the first place.Wink
