It's very welcome news that the subject of 'grooming', sexual assault, rape and trafficking of children is now being spoken of in sermons in Mosques. It's only by properly dealing with this that any trust might be established.

Are these 'sermons' a one-off, what is being said? Are sermons delivered in English language? is it possible for English speakers to know what is being said?

Hindus and Sikhs are also welcoming this initiative, and hope there will be more clarity in who are the victims, and who are the perpetrators.

Thought, effort and resources need to be given to helping the victims of such damaging sexual abuse to recover their lives, and, most importantly, to effectively protect children from this happening to them. This is not just a cultural issue, it's also an inter-generational issue, children have been badly let down, betrayed, by adult society.

Cyffi:  Didn't you see it on the Regional and National News ?

UK Muslim leaders condemn grooming in 'unprecedented' sermon - ITV News.

This link covers several aspects and features:-

In Rochdale, the sermon was delivered in English at the Neeli mosque.

Alyas Karmani, Bradford Iman and director of STREET (Strategy to Reach Educate and Empower Teenagers), who wrote the sermon, has been involved in initiatives against grooming for several years

Thanks, Mojo. Good to see that,

The sermon asked congregations to heed a "call to action". If they see anyone acting suspiciously or suspect sexual grooming is taking place they should report it to the authorities.

Anyone who has reasonable suspicion that such may be taking place, (and this is a crime often committed 'in plain sight'), must act responsibly and speak up.

Dr Taj Hargey, Imam of Oxford Islamic Congregation, comments on the situation and on attitudes that are, hopefully, now in the past.

The future, will have to be different.

It is a start but only a start and will not resolve the issues on its own.

After all, if the Christian churches decided to devote next week's Sunday sermon deploring or condemning  car theft, does anyone think it would make a difference?

This is not car theft, this is people's lives.

It does appear to be "only a start", but it's a big change for UK Mosques to admit there is a problem, never mind speak against it.

Denial was also, for many years, embedded in the public mind

As Dr Taj Hargey, Oxford Imam says, "All the agencies of the state, including police, social services and the care system, seemed eager to ignore the sickening exploitation that was happening before their eyes. Terrified of accusations of racism, desperate not to undermine the official creed of cultural diversity, they took no action against obvious abuse.”

People within the police, social services and other organisations, including Mosques, Temples and Churches, are now singing a different tune. If we, the public, are more aware, speak up and report suspicious situations and behavior, it should be well received and help to stamp out the grooming industry. The grooming and sale of children had been allowed to reach an industrial, inter-city scale before the prosecution of grooming gangs started.

I am very reliably informed that by no means all the mosques chose to deliver this message to their worshippers Cyfrifia.

Initially we were led to believe that this was to be delivered by all mosques but the usual sects and branches within Islam have not made it possible to do this.

So, no united front I'm afraid. Sadly but not entirely unpredictable.

It is a pity that on this dreadful issue, a strong and universal line could not have been taken.

It is. The Mosques may have their own problems and priorities. The important point is that, according to statements made, the police, the council, social services and all authorities are now aware and on the lookout, 'Together Against Grooming', and any reports of suspicious grooming type activity will now be taken seriously and followed up, which, as we know was not the case in the past.
