How many more?

Post  Jeanie on Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:29 pm

I see the  beautiful building The Old Post office is to be turned into a  Bar  & Restaurant,Shocked

Round the corner, the former Yates Wine Lodge another restaurant serving a range of Italian, French and Indian.Neutral

Also in planning news, Mrs Karen Danczuk is applying for licence for Danczuks Delicatessen, 4 - 6 The Walk,  live music, alcohol and late night refreshment, Monday to Sunday, 8am til Midnight Rolling Eyes

How much competition is this and how are they all going to survive ? Is this what Rochdale really needs to bring people back Question

How does being made into a bar detract from the beauty of the building?

Far better that it is used.

Far too much competition in what it is being used for J.B., it just won't survive then what will happen to it ? Same as the Town Hall, under used !   It isn't more Bars & restaurants this town needs to bring life back into it, because so many people simply can't afford to eat out these days not in the real world we now live in very sadly !

According to my information the residents of the town can still afford to spend £68 million in the town's on-line betting shops (source BBC) so one supposes that some can afford to go to restaurants and bars of this ilk to do likewise?????????????? It's a very well known fact Jeanie that the percentage of the population that suffers in recessions is always somewhat smaller than that generally perceived - this time around there are a greater percentage and more concentrated in the deprived areas of the country. Sad but true.Sad

Yes but how much do you need to put inot a fruit machine and one armed bandits? A pound or two? Now how much for a two/three course meal and a drink or two at one sitting? Not much change out of say £30 quid for one quailty meal.

Places seem busy enough when I eat out, I have to say. We want decent attractions in the town centre, so we can't complain when we get them can we?

In any case, thre are far fewer pubs, bars and restaurants in the town centre than there were thirty years ago.

So what other use Jeanie would you have put the building to? It's an extremely large building as I recall. How much is being used for the new enterprise and what about the rest of it?
A building left empty soon deteriorates, especially the exterior fabrics, as many a large hole in the ground testifies. Therefore might this be the lesser of two evils - to coin a phrase?

So, we all moan and grown as shops close down, buildings are boarded up and the building of large retail projects are either announced or cancelled; sometimes the cases in favour and against being posed by the same posters!

Now, we have two businesses about to start up in two buildings in the town centre that would otherwise be unused and left to decay. Which way would you rather have it?

The success of The Baum which has won the coveted National Pub of the Year award has proved that there is room for top quality venues offering good beer and great food and can not only survive but thrive and beat all comers..

Come on Rochdale, lift your heads out of the dust and stop condemning those who are making genuine attempts to lift the town's profile and are prepared to put up their own cash to do it.

I think I will have a look at the new shop when it opens and see what treats I can get. Plus, depending on what sort of business opens at the old Post Office, i will pay it a visit.

I hope the Post Office is moved somewhere in to the empty Shopping Centres and one of the units is utilized. Theres plenty of choice.

At a guess - insufficient footfall - losses - too expensive?/bad service?/incompatible opening times? Those places are run at the ratepayers expense and don't always give the service or the quality or the competitive price because of it.
Perhaps you could enlighten us as to its customer base. It would probably need more than 50 customers a day minimum to break even.

I hope the old Post Office building doesn't fall into disrepair as appears to be happening to the "Bar 5" building on the Esplanade after that closed down.
Sadly the majority of these new restaurants only appear to have a maximum lifespan of 1-5 years for some peculiar reason?

There's nothing peculiar regarding the reason Mulldog. It's a well known fact in the entertainment/catering business that the general public work in 'phases'. What's 'in' today can very quickly go 'out' tomorrow.
In the beat-club era we always 'banked' on a minimum of 3 years popularity, max 5 years when deciding on locations for a new venue knowing full well that such was the best we could expect from the nuances of our clientel. It's been that way for as long as I've been involved in the business and contrary to popular belief - nothing really changes.Cool

Some places do have longevity however. I was really surprised the other day when somebody told me how long the San Remo had been open on Drake St.

Absolutely so teamplayer2. Some do make it for the long haul. I would suggest that is down to good consistent management and a will to succeed when times get tough - and - not wanting the easy cash all the time. By that I mean there's good money to be had at a new place opening which lasts for a year or more before the place becomes a 'bit old hat'. Get over that ensuing period and things tend to settle down to a steady income which suits some - the others tend to sell and move on. T'is the way of things.Wink

Looks like RO took Jeanie's comment from here about a number of new bars and restaurants, and used it out of context in their article about the Danczuk's new venture, which made her look a bit silly.
Hope it was an honest mistake.

Yes I was very disappointed with this article also quite surprised as I have always been open & honest with RO ! but if it makes them tell a tale to suit their needs at my expense so be it !
I will always voice my opinion regardless of who it is or what the subject is if I feel the subject is worth it in this case I chose to do so !
I still maintain (in my opinion) a licence to sell alcohol 8am til 12 midnight is a wine bar rather than a deli ?
But I still wish them well Neutral
