So NHS staff are being called to regard this vile practice as criminal rather than cultural. About bloody time. Amazing that we are well into the 21st century before attempts are being made to deal with this butchery.

No doubt some will see this as evidence of anti-Islamic attacks but there really should be zero tolerance on this with severe penalties for those involved.

Totally barbaric.

I totally agree Hinch. It is barbaric and long overdue, nothing more than torture for these poor girls !

I read a book on it a few years go Jeanie. It's not just the surgery itself that is agony, but everyday acts such as child bearing, intercourse and even urination and defecation are agony and some of the long term health problems relating to semi permanent infections are totally barbaric.

The physical practices differ across cultures, but in some the complete removal of all the external genetalia is involved and the remaining passageway sewn up with twine or thorns to supposedly make the male sexual experience more pleasurable. The vagina is sometimes sewn up again immediately after childbirth making this a lifelong torture for females.

The 'instruments' used for the procedure often amount to nothing more than a sharp piece of glass welded by an old crone. God knows how many die during the procedure itself but, by the sound of it, these could actually be the lucky ones.

When I was at school, I seem to remember queuing up for 'willy inspections' by the school medical service. It sounds as if this service needs to be extended.

There has to be positive action taken to entirely remove this practice from the UK. It's a simple choice between what is right and what is wrong.

He was completely exonorated Atlas and got a knighthood and a plaque erected in his honour on the Town Hall.

There were even calls for the new leisure centre to be named after him for his services to... err... scantily clad boys! Get your facts right!

At least there were no knives, razors, broken glass and the cutting away off body parts involved. (I hope).

Female genital mutilation is one of the most injurious and barbaric violences against the person.

That 'cultural sensitivity.' has been put forward as an argument to support it being allowed in the UK just goes to show how discredited the 'cultural sensitivity' argument has become.

Girls and women born in the UK must be protected from female genital mutilation. Any argument against that is both invalid and arguably an arrestable offence under 'incitement to violence'.

Stop FGM in the UK Now - e-petition

Over 66,000 women in the UK have already undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) and more than 24,000 girls are at risk ... It is a British problem.

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/52740

4  10.45 pm  “The Cruel Cut” documentary starts to look at the complex world of FGM, how it could be your neighbour or the little girls you see who could be at risk, or already quietly suffering from the consequences.      It looks at some cultural and societal pressures and how it continues despite being illegal in the UK - there have been no prosecutions although it was made illegal in 1985 - 28 years ago.

The programme follows one mother's campaign, who was herself cut when she was 7 years old, and a group of survivors attempting to take their cause to the top of the government.    There's been speculation whether the documentary is hard-hitting or broad enough to raise good awareness, changes and to 'sell' the e-petition. An essentially "sensitive" broadcasting time ??

Despite being illegal since 1985, no one has ever been found guilty of FGM in British courts.

This time arrests have been made and it could be the first UK prosecution.
