Lib Dems lose deposit at Wythenshawe

Well, Labour were returned with an increased majority, the Tories were beaten into third place by UKIP And the piss-poor Lib Dems plummet by 17%, bringing them below 5% of the total and they lost their deposit. A sign of things to come.

My own party, the OMRLP scored a respectable 288, a great result given the low turnout.

This is the sixth time that UKIP have thrashed the Tories in the past three and a half years. About time the Lib Dems called it a day. They have lost their deposit EIGHT times now in by-elections since the coalition. Looks like they are a spent force.

Shall we have a whip round for them?

Put me down for 10p Chill.

That having been said, I like Andy Kelly, the local Lib Dems candidate. He has a passion for Rochdale but lacks experience and has no credible party machine to back him after the Great Schism which resulted in Greg Couzens' Disunited Alliance.

Agree with you about Andy. I have a lot of time for him he does have a lot of passion for Rochdale and he has done a lot to help me.

Then perhaps you should encourage him to put up as an Independent. If he has the right attitudes and will fight for the town perhaps he should be helped to do so. I can see Labour keeping the town which from the record you have portrayed on this forum doesn't seem such a good idea to me. Too long in power is the third step beyond 'corrupts absolutely' and is a very bad thing in politics.

If your MP cannot control the local politicians under his umbrella it matters not that he does a good job in Westminster for it is more often at grass root level that good things get done in the town and with much less corruption.

The last MP we had who "controlled the local politicians" was Cyril 'Paedo' Smith; the effects of which remain to be fully examined. I don't think we want any more of that.

Danczuk seems a good MP who is not afraid to speak out on sensitive issues and give out criticism where it is deserved. He deserves at least another term.

Andy is a good local councillor but his leadership skills are untested. After all, leading a small huddle of five councillors is not exactly very testing. He will be worth watching over the next few years though.

His task has to be to establish his credentials by rebuilding a credible local party machine.

The Tories, of course, are not even on the horizon.

Your point is well taken Hinch. However -the man needs to have some better control over these local lunatics you seem to have inherited. Not a week goes by these days without them bringing the local politics into disrepute or  making a laughing stock of their organisation. The people need to believe that those representing them are not money-grabbing, self-interested parasites regardless of colour, creed or gender.
The present bunch are some way off it from all accounts.

I know Andy has been selected to run as MP in 2015.

Then you are on the horns of a dilemma are you not. Two relatively decent candidates for MP from different parties both of whom seem to be supported by very little substance by their local parties. I doubt the electorate of Rochdale (the majority) have very little knowledge of who they are or what they represent or have any inkling that they are probably the best of the bunch and like sheep will vote for their 'usual' party or local idiot without thinking of that outcome or consequence. Some people in the local set-ups have been around too long and care little for anything other than how much they can screw out of it and building up nest-eggs for when they eventually get too old or are 'found out'. Nothing will change for the town until the 'dross' have been 'hoovered' out. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Yes two very decent candidates. Clearly Mr Danczuk stock has risen with his comments on many subjects, from the horrific Child Abuse in Rochdale to the obscene pay rises by a select few in the RBMC corridors of power.

Mr Kellys chances both in the local and now General Election have been, in my humblw view, damaged by the antics of both Local and National Lib Dems. You only have to look at whats just happened in this by-election. Not rocket science to apply this result to local and national future polls. So thats a damn shame that Andy is facing an up hill struggle.
