Generally speaking, I find the debate on independence tedious in the extreme but... the more I hear Alex Salmond and his dreadful deputy speak, the more convinced I become that they know nothing about economics or financial matters.

Even if I were an ardent Scottish nationalist, neither would convince me that they were a safe pair of hands.

That's the trouble with nationalist parties. They wrap themselves up in the flag but don't have a clue.

They just assume that they can stay in Europe and adopt the pound as if they were out shopping in Tesco for fish fingers. None of Salmond's arguments on economic affairs are convincing.

As part of my job, I deal with customers over in Scotland.  You should hear what they say about Alex.

Buffoon is just one word.

'Dangerous' would be more appropriate. It really is time the peoples of the world woke up to what 'nationalism' breeds and what can be the 'end product'. It bodes no wellbeing in it's messianic rampage towards isolationism and misplaced loyalties. No good ever came of it - or will. No

Could it be that what counts in the long run is not so much the type of grouping that people organise themselves into, as the quality of whatever type of government there is, be it local, regional, national or larger.

No, because it isn't down to 'governments'. The mob decides the course of action when the chips are down - as can be seen in Cairo and Kiev -. It was the organised mob that put Mussolini, Franco, Castro and Hitler into power - that or the organised military coup, which is virtually the same thing but with guns. Nationalism by the front door, i.e. in a democracy, is usually attained by playing on emotions of loyalty and tribal fervour, offering jam today and jam tomorrow. The trouble with that is the 'mob' then expect the rewards which more often than not cannot be given which leads the elected power structure to become more and more dictatorial in its efforts to satisfy the mobs demands, which leads ultimately to criminal activities (in the guise of 'for the good of the nation') and hence to uncontrollable catastrophic events. It is a very bad 'form' of politics and rarely has a satisfactory outcome. It's dangerous in the wrong hands. And 'man's' hands are most certainly not to be trusted. Rolling Eyes
