The by-election
Lessons to be learned. Can Labour disentangle itself from political correctness and allow open discussion of immigration? It can attempt to, but the underlying problem, the use of political correctness as political method goes deeper than that.

Re: The by-election
There is quite a large immigrant vote in this country by now. mainly in the big cities and mainly at the poorer end of the population which means they tend to vote Labour in the majority. Whilst immigration may be a bone of contention in some parts, especially south of Birmingham, it is still too delicate an issue to rise up to that mad UKIP bunch and their particular brand of rhetoric. I would fully expect ANY political party, given the present situation, to respond to the immigration problem, quietly and succinctly, whilst in office, knowing as they do that to continue to ignore the problem would only bring them pain.
There are no quick fixes. Shouting abuse from the rooftops only serves to exacerbate the problem and drive sections off one against the other. That's not the way we do things here. One should vote for sanity and reasonableness in the situation as it is presented at the time - not knee-jerk at every blow of the soap-box standers. It will get fixed -eventually.

Political correctness has little effect on those who might "shout abuse from the rooftops", except perhaps to push them further in that direction. The calculated purpouse and function of political correctness is to stifle and prevent the expression of reasonable opinion which does not agree with the party line. Political correctness is basically incompatible with democracy. We have become acccustomed to debates where someone putting forward a reasonable opinion is insulted and shouted down.

A very depressing result. The winner was one of my best mates but she has a big job on her hands in next year's GE.

Your good mate was an excellent, and impressive, candidate, if Labour had put forward someone rather more average, UKIP would have won that one.

Re: The by-election
I suspect that given a General Election the electorate might have a bit more sense than vote for candidates they will have to 'endure' for a further five years. As for fat, well-troughed, Spanish sounding buffoons from Europe telling us we CAN'T do something because it breaks 'European Law' and that if we pull out we won't have any influence on the 'World Stage' - he knows what he can do. One assumes he thinks 'we care'. Given where Europe 'might' have been had we 'cared less' in the past the man has obviously not learned any lessons. Idiot.
