This cheeky chappie can.

Cool  Mr. E.O. Wilson has age, wisdom, qualifications, curiosity, years of hard dedicated work, something to say and the ability to communicate. Worth a listen as he explains the meaning of life etcetera.

He explains in rather more academic terms than I ever could the evolution of the species and others and why our species has, in general terms, exceeded the advancement of the rest to bring our species to the top of the evolutionary tree in our environment on this planet. I agree wholeheartedly with his conclusions on 'group' ascendency as opposed to 'kin ascendancy' and would associate his conclusions with man's own capacity to evolve his own particular advancement in his own way at his own pace not withstanding other 'groups' interference. He touched on cultures and how they evolved within 'groups' and had he had more time may well have gone on to explain that 'groups' interfering with other 'groups' are the main causes of conflict - notwithstanding 'needs' for survival.
In all it was very interesting.
Why are we here? Because we are. What is the meaning of life? An evolutionary process containing the will and acquired abilities to survive. What is life's purpose? To procreate and advance the species. Why? Because it is.
Very Happy

An intelligent and entertaining speaker, seems to be up to speed with science, and he's written a lot of books. Here's a link to a radio interview with him.

Yes. Listened with interest. Along the lines of his previous lecture although mightily condensed.
The argument 'group' against 'altruistic' and the crossing of the two and the 'where' do we go from here before we destroy ourselves' scenario has a long way to go.

Will I live that long!

It helps to explain much I have experienced as I have passed along my merry way. It doesn't however make things any easier or more hopeful for the future - not that such will be my worry.Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral

Must find out more about the subsurface lithoautotrophic microbial ecosystems he mentions, I will put that on the 'to do' list. And a few other things. Cool

Might do, but there's always more things need doing than there is time to do them in.

Only do those that have the most importance to your general well-being and turf the rest out where they belong - cloud cuckoo land. That way you might just satisfy your time in the greater way of things. Chasing tails only leads to madness and motion sickness. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

The world might be a better place if a lot of people didn't bother doing a lot of the stuff they do do.

It's the natural tendencies for humans to be a social animal and gain personal acceptance that makes many pursue activities that may not actually suit them or their individual personalities. We know how the older people get the wiser they become. I would contend the more critical in their life choices they become aided and abetted by their personal experiences of others in the past. Only time can provide a person with clearer vision. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

George Monbiot, born 27 January 1963, seems quite good at talking sense and putting forward a fair argument.

Talk is easy. Implementation and equanimity resulting in actions taken - not so. I don't decry those that attempt to talk to change - but in order to 'make a difference' takes more than 'butter-flying' subjects and expecting everyone else to do the 'hard work'. Stick to 'one' imperative and see it through. Then you will deserve my approbation. Ooooops !Mad

With so many 'experts' talking deep bull poo, a journalist who does his research, has the gift of the gab, who can and will calmy contradict them and explain why, is pretty useful really.
George Monbiot.
