I note a sense of reality coming into the governments thinking. The latest Defence budgets are being increased and orders placed for some up to date military hardware at last. Do you think they know something we don't - or to put it another way - something we have known for years and wondered if we were all being left as cannon-fodder?? Often difficult to predict what will be needed. At the moment cyber warfare and what commentators on events in Belgium call the 'jihadi community' appear to be priorities. The population would probably feel safer with money spent on border control and police. With europe, africa, middle east all looking unstable, defence needs to be flexible. Saying of the week seems to be "Shoot the wolf nearest the sledge."

That of course being a reactive-defensive policy as opposed to an offensive-active policy. I always think prevention is better than cure. I don't like waiting for the landslide to begin. My preference would be to replant the trees first leaving the roots of the previous in place. Therefore, as previously and many times stated, I would have sent the whole lot of immigrants packing and not opened the borders in the first place. But hey - what do I know? I'm not a politician. The E.U. has a mass of laws, regulations, accords and so on, which different countries make a pick and mix of, and ignore as it suits. UK defence policy has to defend against potential problems in europe.

The defence of the realm begins where the aggressor resides - not where he attacks. If he gets close enough to attack you in person (on your own turf) then you have failed in your first objective. Any good tactician will tell you that. Your strategy should be one of a 'refusnik' - they shall not pass 'go'. Better to despoil their home than yours. However - we cannot adopt a sound policy of defence if our allies are content to do nothing or (in this event) actively assist in providing our enemy with 'space' within which to attack us. Therefore - we must (for our own protection) draw a line in the sand as far from our shores as possible. Ergo - either 'we' attack them in their own space or we collect and provide a 'proxy army' to do the same thing. Logical. Rational. Outside the realms of the 'dream world' in which too many of us these days lives. We will learn to our peril the mistakes history have taught us 'not' to make .Rolling Eyes Mad Rolling Eyes Mad

Lines drawn in the sand are soon lost to the wind.

That's what makes them so useful. You can redraw them as it suits your purpose.
