Background music is a painful noise that drives people away. Like tear gas, it can be useful, for clearing an area where young vandals are doing damage, by playing classical music at them. It affects different people in different ways. the news article is about how an outing to a pub or restaraunt can be made so unpleasant by it that people won't go again. My problem with it is clothes shopping. Finding the right clothes that fit in the shops isn't easy, and it's made worse by background music. That's why I'm often dressed in old rags, it's the fault of background music, it's a pain, I can only stand it for so long, and not long enough to choose clothes.
Background music has proved useful to me, as I was, at one point, developing something of a beer drinking habit, but the background music in all the pubs was too irritating, acted as aversion therapy and cured me of any tendency to social drinking.

Background music has it uses. Where and when it should be used can be a 'minefield'. I know. I was there. One man's meat is another man's dead animal -.

It's done to create atmosphere where it is perceived that insufficient is there in the first place. Is that a failure of the 'producer' or the 'customer'? Answer that one and you have your answer to the question - when should background music be played. At what level of sound. For what period of time. etc etc etc etc. Been there. Devil's cauldron -. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Shocked Shocked Smile Smile Smile Smile

Background music has become essential to the functioning of todays society, and the world of the future. Without it we would all be lost and bewildered, going from place to place seeking 'atmosphere' and meaning. Background music is a great civilising influence.
Background music calms mothers as they give birth, babies in the womb and later as they lie in their cots. Toddlers enjoy background music, it should be available at all times. Schoolchildren today find it much easier to work and concentrate with loud background music, teenagers of course, love background music, adults need and enjoy background music while they work, whilst they relax and increasingly, while they sleep. Background music calms the motorist as they wait in traffic jams, and of course we would feel something was missing if there was no background music whilst we potter in the garden, go for a walk or try to chat with freinds, go shopping, have a bath or go to the toilet. Background music soothes staff and patients in hospitals and nursing homes, in hospices and at funerals. We now have the technology and can provide background music for aeroplane passengers, miners in the depths of the earth, the armed forces as they perform their duties, patients in the waiting rooms of doctors and dentists, and of course, whilst the dentist goes about his work of drilling etc. Astronauts on the space station enjoy background music, we can send encoded background music on space probes hurtling off to other galaxies.

Providing constant and continuous background music at sufficient volume for everyone from birth to death is a technical challenge. We're nearly there, as technology advances, loudspeakers wired into the environment every few metres, or implanted background music electrodes into the brain may help, so everyone everywhere in the world can enjoy the benefits of background music, and no-one will ever have to hear the boring, irritating and stressful natural sounds of the natural world ever again. Won't that be nice.

Those who care for the natural world will want to provide more background music for plants and animals, studies prove the benefit. Background music is provided for plants in commercial greenhouses to make them grow better, (they prefer classical) and for cattle in their stables, to increase milk yields. This could soon be extended to provide background music for penguins and chimpanzees, with background music in the depths of the jungle, across the deserts and polar icecaps, and in every nook and cranny everywhere, bringing permanent joy and relaxation to the entire planet.

We can expect the use of recorded music will continue to increase, but the latest development is people with MP3 players, earplugs, and a tsh-tsh-t-tsh noise.

If the news article is correct, and people are leaving pubs and restaraunts to escape the background music, perhaps there is a trend to avoid it.

For some, it would be a relief and removal of stress if it became a matter of choice rather than compulsory, the social change towards individuals directly self-injecting it into their eardrums by their own  choice may be a good thing.

I've seen people dying in hospice being really stressed by having unwanted music played at them, hour after hour, they being too weak to get to it and turn it off, and afraid of making themselves unpopular by repeatedly asking different shifts of staff for it to be turned off.

Unwanted background music for those who don't want it is a serious unpleasantness. The assumption that everyone likes background music, or that it is harmless, is very wrong.

Neighbours who play loud music too much and too often may be suffering from this same deluded assumption, and think they somehow have a right, or the moral high ground, that those who complain about unwanted and loud music are negative and repressive. The stress effect can be so bad it leads to mental illness and violence.

Music has become, in these situations, yet another industrial pollutant to be deal with. The music industry is a massive money maker. Purveyors of popular music have an interest in promoting recorded music as positive, harmless good fun for everyone, but of course there are other realities involved.
