The election result
Election results for Rochdale 2017
Labour Tony Lloyd Votes 29,035
Conservative Jane Howard Votes 14,216
Liberal Democrat Andy Kelly Votes 4,027
UKIP Christopher Baksa Votes 1,641
Independent Simon Danczuk Votes 883
Greater Manchester Homeless Voice Andy Littlewood Votes 242
A convincing win for Tony Lloyd, Labour Party. In response, Richard Farnell, Rochdale council leader, said -
“For far too long we’ve had people who want to drag the town back, who want to talk about the things that are wrong and for the first time we’ll have an MP who will speak out about all that’s good about Rochdale. It’s got great people, great communities, a great future. For the first time in many years we’ll have an MP who will put the town first, who will talk up the town, who will be a strong and positive voice for Rochdale on the national stage.”
Talking positive can have good political results, but the downside is turning a blind eye to things that need sorting out. Don't let that happen again.

Re: The election result
I don't believe a single word of it. Farnell (as I understand it) has done nothing for the town that a blind donkey couldn't have done other than hold onto power for far, far too long and take whatever money he and his cronies could get their hands on. As for a Labour MP in opposition doing anything really useful or constructive for the town I beg to differ. Simon was bad enough. I reckon this chap will be better if only because he has yet to turn out to be a sex-crazed numpty. In truth nobody can put Rochdale 'back' to what it was even should they be on the winning side both in the GMC and Westminster because it is not 'politics' that is required. What is really required is a wish for the town and its people to be proud of the place and to do nothing that would be harmful or negative. Good jobs, well paid, is the first priority - and a sense of belonging and men of 'vision' who are not just out for what they can get. Good luck with all that -.

Your expectation that politicians and council officers in Rochdale will turn out to be sex crazed numpties, out for what they can get and as useful as a blind donkey may be based on many years of obervation and experience, but, erm, well, we will wait and see.

Re: The election result
They all start out with the best of intentions. Observe the realities. Retreat into their 'bunkers' and wait it out - - - - .Nothing can realistically be done under a ten year programme and none have that guaranteed tenure. As a councillor it's 3 years max. As a sitting MP it's five years max or possibly much less. You won't remember the Aldermen of old. They were the great and the good of the town who lived there all their lives and did their business in the town. They consequently had great leverage on the town and its 'councillors' and MP's as they could get things done by virtue of influences and private money. That system lapsed after the 2nd WW and along with the de-industrialisation the town lost it's 'under-funding' which was absolutely vital to keep the wheels of 'commerce' healthy in the town and the surrounding areas. It's called 'progress' - but not as we know it Jim.

Re: The election result
Progress is an outdated concept, what we have instead is complexity. Complicated complexity.

What you have is a rudderless ship with a numpty at the helm. Socialism is fine always and providing it has bottomless pockets and the treasury and government behind it. Rochdale has none of these things and will have to take what scraps are thrown its way. The biggest problem is you have a generational problem of the Asian community having been 'taught' to vote Labour and who aspire to 'run' things for their own benefit and - a population brought up on socialist ideals (which are no longer valid). Best of luck with all that. Co's there's nowt down for any of it.

A rudderless ship with no-one (or a numpty) at the helm can sail a long way on the open sea, it's when it gets to the complicated bits with rocks and so on it gets tricky.

And is subject to all the vagaries of the oceans in its passing. Everyone with a brain knows never to take the seas with contempt. I know. C'ause I've been there. But fortunately never without a rudder and a good helmsman (although we did nearly devastate the St Lawrence Seaway lock system through cheap spare parts and crap workmanship). See Ower Dawning by me.

The thinner you spread the 'jam' the less palatable it becomes.
