Can someone explain ?
What is the role of jobcentre staff?
I always thought it was to help people find a job.
Or is it to embarrass people by asking them why are they bothering to sign on when all they are entitled to is the stamp, no cash benefit?

I remember when I used to sign on many many years ago at the old offices opposite the Train Station. The people there used to be really curt and non descript. Questioning you on all the jobs you had applied for etc. Couldn't wait to get out. Thank heavens I got on a training course after college.

I bet even they couldn't answer you any more that's the sad thing they make these changes but then hide behind their desks for the shop floor staff to take the brunt

The ones I've come across recently certainly haven't graduated from charm school, I sat there waiting for someone and just watching how rudely they spoke to 'clients' I was imagining what would happen if someone spoke to me like that! ...and it wasn't pretty

We have already been here charly - n' est pas? They are not there to make you feel comfortable. They (their peers) don't want you to come at all. Helps to keep the figures down. I know dozens who have given up on the job centre and gone 'private' or because they don't get any help (other than a stamp) find it cheaper not to use the petrol. Job centres are for the uninitiated and naive only.
