Fireworks.
The annual round of firework injuries has started, this one sounds worse than usual, with an 'industrial' firework.

Re: Fireworks.
Looking back I was as dangerous as all my friends with fireworks, we used to do the Guy Fawkes collecting and spend all the proceeds on penny bangers and Rip-Raps, we used to carry them in our pockets too! we'd light them whilst holding them then throw them into the air

Well, I hope the child doesn't lose his eyesight. Fireworks these days tend to be rather more powerful and dangerous than the rip-raps we threw about as children.

Re: Fireworks.
Just reading about this tragic story, it is reported the firework was an industrail 'onion' friework.
Where did it come from? Was it a shop that sold it?

Re: Fireworks.
I remember a fireworks display at Todmorden Cricket club in 1997. A local man had organised a display involving a van driving through the unlit bonfire, arranged as a tunnel, and an explosion and firework display starting then.
The person given the job of detonating the explosion got the timing wrong, the man was badly injured and burned.
After the police and ambulances left, the firework display continued, but the crowd were glum. It wasn't fun, it was horrible.
Every year in November, not far from here, someone is horribly injured and burned. Do I like fireworks and bonfire night? Not a lot.

Re: Fireworks.
Personally I would make the purchase of fireworks impossible without a license. Licenses given only to adults at a cost to cover the administration of the scheme. There should be encouragement for groups to put on displays. 16years old should be the limit of buying the fireworks.

Re: Fireworks.
You would reduce it from 18 UTD?

Re: Fireworks.
If the age at the moment they can be bought is 18 then keep it at that, though not too concerned about the age. The main point I was trying to make is that the buying of fireworks should be limited to those who have obtained a license to buy, hopefully leading to people getting together to have group displays rather the random fireworks we have now, due to the cost of obtaining a license.

Illegal operators use Bonfire night as cover to burn toxic waste, tyres, plastic, rubber, oil and paint.

Re: Fireworks.
The problem is how do we stop the illegal sales as there is always someone who will buy them ? and no matter how many warnings go out they just don't care?
The sad thing is from my day as a youngster (yes I can still remember) we had Fireworks these days they are lethal weapons that maim & ruin lives

They always did ruin some lives.
We control guns - heavy fireworks are at least as dangerous.

Yes, let's have more of the 'nanny-state.' Let's ban breathing as it involves inhaling various harmful gases.

Re: Fireworks.
I'd ban organised firework displays. Full of bloody do-gooders, killjoys, elf and safety n'er do wells and council jobsworths.
It won't be long before they make us all wear safety-goggles, ear-protectors and flame-retardant gloves when we hold a sparkler.

Re: Fireworks.
Ah the good old days. Don't yer just pine? Taken all the fun (not to mention excitement and danger) out of everything for the sake of namby-pamby know-alls who know 'nowt' and do 'nowt' worthwhile. I've got my cotton-wool balls for when the grandchildren come round. Can't have them knowing what a dangerous world we live in. Might give them a fright. Tch.

Re: Fireworks.
For the first time in many a year I found fireworks weren't a regular nightly nuisance this year in Rochdale. I'm putting it down to lack of money to purchase them more than anything rather than a clamp down by an authorities.

2 men arrested in Rochdale today, one for drinking battery acid, the other for swallowing a firework.
The first man has been charged the other has been let off.
