Steaming through Wales

Post  Hinch on Wed May 15, 2013 6:26 am

What better way to prepare for my forthcoming surgery that to pack my hats, tent, telescope, Bradshaw's, marine VHF, fishing rod etc and head off on my own to Wales for a few days?

Have found a great campsite at Shell Island near Harlech which is right on the beach and accessed by causeway only when the tide is right and where they actually allow real campfires.

Planning to do Cambrian Coast Line, Welsh Highland Railway, Ffestiniog and another small line further south.

Off in a week or two and really looking forward to it.

Not been to Shell Island before. It is only costing me £6.50 per night!

Have any of you been to this site? It is 300 acres and looks fab. http://www.shellisland.co.uk/

They are holding a German beer and food festival there in October and I'm already booked in for it.

Camping? CAMPING? When you mentioned the lilo, I assumed it was for a nostalgic tryst under a leafy bough and a starry sky, not for beauty sleep under canvas. Oh well, just call me Marina!!

I am rethinking the Lilo thing after the Rossendale Free Press reported last week of a woman bitten by an adder as she was walking her dog just yards from a certain layby on the Grane Road.

Her arm swelled up to three times its normal size and she experienced severe breathing problems.

Imagine the stress I would feel if I suddenly heard you breathing heavily so close to that very spot?

Looks great.

Hope you have a lovely time.

Didn't think you would be worried about adders after all those two-legged snakes you've had to deal with. Laughing

Have a great time. I look forward to hearing what you think of it - it's on husband's list of "must go" sites.

Have not been to Shell Island but I know someone who has, they thought it was brilliant. I have been on the Cambrian Coast line, it is very good. I boarded at Barmouth. Enjoy your visit to God's own country.

Would like to try out Shell Island myself. A friend went there a couple of years ago and unluckily ended up with a large group of noisy, drunken neighbours on the first night. He let the office know and it was sorted straight away, which impressed me.

How about a forum weekend in October for the German beer and food festival? I have a spare 3 person tent and some posters have tents they bought for Chill-Out.

Could be a great weekend.

I am going during half-term week. (Bad planning!) Never been before so will suss it out and see what it's like. Reports so far are very favourable. A few drunks from time to time but good security.

Surrounded by sea on three sides and accessed by a causeway apart from high tide. Fishing, campfires, cafe, bar and restaurant. Plenty of loos and showers and a good on-site shop.

It really does sound fab and not too regimented like some Caravan & Camping Club sites I could mention.

Hopefully by October I'll have had my surgery so I should be getting around on sticks or using my mobility scooter.

Will take some pictures and video and post them.

Cherry Tree Farm (Greetland) allows fires (off the ground), as do Charity Farm (Wigan way), Rough Hey Wood (Triangle).

Off to Shell Island again this weekend with grandkids. Camping, fishing, steam railways, a bit of shooting, star-watching, VHF radio and perhaps a beer or three. Hope the weather and my knee holds out but looking good so far.

Trying out my new 4-berth tent this time.

Mrs H just back from the Land of Saints and Scholars yet again so she will be minding the ranch.

Cymru am byth!
