If you're Wahhabi and you know it clap your ...

Post  cyfrifia on Tue Apr 05, 2016 9:45 am

Interesting programme on radio 4 this morning, a series about aspects of Islam with a chatty mufti explaining his branch of Islam. How little we know. Radio 4 seems to be the only media left that both makes an effort to research a subject, and not drown it out with low-budget background music.

There is no area of life however important or unimportant, relevant or irrelevant, that doesn't involve or attract "claptrap". Religion, culture, history, politics, football, etc. Perhaps the more relevant a subject, the more claptrap it involves?

In the headlong race towards conformity and mini-stardom the vast majority of people, who wish for their 15 minutes of fame, will do or spout any old (or new) hogwash to claim their rightful place amongst the 'z' list dross. Clap-trap is regularly used as a 'fill-in' to stretch out the process which would otherwise be even more crushingly boring to the listener or watcher as the case may be. It really is amazing the depths that some will plumb to talk waffle on the most mundane of subjects in order to claim their self-appointed status in the hierarchy of the 'Clap-trappers Guild'. And enough of this waffle as we move on - - - - - - - - hopefully to better places. Depends in what sense we could "move on". There is no escape from the human race and it's foibles, not in this lifetime. No man is an island, except for the Isle of Man, which is the exception that proves the rule.

Don't tell me. You were once attacked viciously by a Manx cat! Strangely, and because of close proximity for some years, I have never been to the Isle of Man and therefore cannot comment on your obvious knowledge of the fact. Ergo - I will withdraw on that one. As for dissecting oneself from the human race in order to escape its mundanely torturous environs and inhabitants that is a far easier task than you might imagine. However - separation of such has its own 'demons'. Thus the truth of the saying 'no man is an island'. He can however be an archipelago or an isthmus which to some extent satisfies that initial desire.Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Shocked Shocked Smile

Although the Channel 4 program "What British muslims really think" was fairly superficial, it's remarkable to see mainstream media even daring to deal with the subject. Is the political correctness of a few years ago fading away?

The plain truth is that Political Correctness has always been a superficial construct. Attempting to run before one can walk is a human trait and laudable in some aspects - but not in natural evolution of the species. They that attempt to force the issue by artificial means will ultimately fail. Ergo - your question answers itself by dint of natural force. The pendulum will return to that which is by force of nature its correct position - ultimately. Arrogance - tch. When will they ever learn. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Whether we like it or not, we live in a 'socially engineered' society, when that engineering is badly designed, hastily assembled and of poor quality, cogs eventually break up and fragments hit the fan.

Which brings one around to 'social planning'. A very Victorian construct and based upon the individuals right to determine his/her actions and futures but within the laws moulded and passed by their more capable peers. What is wrong with that prospectus? Er - the top dogs make sure they remain top dogs and only allow passage of those that can contribute to the top dog club.
It has taken 100 years to begin to chip away at that construct. We have barely begun - but begun we have as those that aspire to the top find that they need those below to assist them, the 'top' being a harder nut to crack than they envisaged.
It might be we have to take a less than welcome road of travel over these next few decades in order to address the imbalances and try and produce a more rational and equitable society. I can see great changes ahead and blood in some instances to repair the machinery to which you allude and to remove the shrapnel that peppers its victims. Social engineering depends, to an extent, on the mass of people being compliant with the processes of social engineering applied to them, shaping their society, or the society they live within.

Yes. But they are just such in that they are reasonably comfortable with their lot. It isn't until the greater mass begin to feel downtrodden that they make the effort to rise and rail against inequities and by then of course it is too late for the process to be bloodless. The powers that are and that be know this and maintain the status-quo by only pressing with a deft touch and in a dozen different directions at once - thus alienating less and keeping the factions apart. Surreptitious. Intelligent and diabolical - but effective.Mad Mad Mad Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Social engineering generally seems to be associated with the negatives you describe. Perhaps that's because it's such a boring subject, and fraught with pitfalls for the well-meaning, so we tend to leave it to the politicians.

Leaving one's life and future to the vagaries of the politician is and always was a very dangerous negation of one's own responsibilities to oneself and one's nearest and dearest. You pay the man to work for you on your behalf in the hope that he will be diligent in his endeavours. If it transpires otherwise you should sack him and re-employ another more suitable person. Just as you would if the man came to do the garden and sat drinking tea all day instead of doing the job he is being paid for.

Of course it's an arms length deal and one over which you don't have very much control. You do however have some control - democracy and freedom to vote etc. Which is far more than many others have.

A word of warning however - the further away you exercise your control the less effective it is. Out of sight out of mind. And in some cases you may find you haven't any control because the manipulators (politicians) are in disguise as super-civil-servants unelected and representative of commerce and business as a priority with the actual 'people' coming a poor third in line. Use it or lose it. Democracy is a fragile instrument at the best of times. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
