There is vague talk of urgent environmental action to make the city greener, developing and improving existing city parks might not be the answer.

https://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/news-features/2/news-headlines/109830/incoming-metro-mayors-must-take-urgent-action-to-improve-the-environment-making-city-regions-cleaner-and-greener-new-research-shows

Our city parks presently provide the essential open spaces our society needs for drinking, sexual assaults, drug dealing, off-road motoring, violence and vandalism, exercising dangerous dogs skateboarding, flying drones, cricket, frisbies and somewhere for youngsters to run round screaming etc. etc. Can we reasonably put more pressure on these limited spaces to provide space for wildlife and nature?

Might be better to designate new and separate green spaces for environmental stuff. Carefully organised precision bombing by the R.A.F. might be cost-effective.

Again the results of removing sanctions and removing policing. All Municipal Parks were policed in my day - they were known as Park Keepers - and woe betide if they caught you doing something anti-social. You can't blame the kids if they allowed to run riot. Society must choose. Rolling Eyes

The choice not to employ park keepers seems to have been made.

We are a mollycoddled nation, so the idea of bombing our own cities to create nature reserves may not appeal, but it makes sense, giving practice to anti-terror squads in evacuating an area, and making good use of the precision bombing capabilities of the R.A.F. Probably makes more sense than bombing other countries.

The main point though, is that, with air, and all the other forms of pollution, overcrowding, etc., and especially if the new housing that is needed is ever built, our cities such as Manchester will need new 'wild' green spaces to make them 'liveable' in the future, re-jigging existing parks with eco-gadgets is not enough.

Technology will take care of many of today's anti-social problems. Once robotics become the norm the streets and leisure places will be controlled artificially as will the people living amongst it. Crime, of whatever nature, will become as sophisticated and i don't doubt the State will be behind as always - running to catch up. UNTIL - the era of AI when the people will become subservient to the 'rulers' and will have to comply or be eliminated.

Sound horrendous doesn't it? Be thankful you live today and not in the distant tomorrow. The only purpose man would participate with his genius and 'comply' is for the survival of the species as co-provider to navigate the heavens and proliferate. You know it makes sense.

Biological scientists recommend a third of the planet be immedately given over to nature if life on earth is to survive. Meanwhile, as cities like Manchester become ever more congested and polluted, to develop a new series of spaces for nature, separate from leisure facilities, is not so much sensible, as essential.

Small lakes and water features, are the basic architecture of such nature reserves. These could best be quickly and efficiently created with explosives. Potential damage to services calculated for and avoided. Disturbance of earth containing historic industrial pollutants minimised with the depth and type of explosions used plus containment with water spray etc.

Population exclusion using camera drones, sniffer dogs, laser technology etc would provide excellent real life training facilities. Crowds who gather for demolitions would equally enjoy the spectacle of RAF bombing, and perhaps then be interested in the reasons why such green spaces are being created.

Alternatives would be a labour force like that which dug the canals, but, do such teams of people exist today? Or, conventional earth moving machinery, which would compact the soil.

What do you mean 'do they exist today'? Of course they do. It's you and me (or to be more precise those that follow our grand-children's generation). What do you think they are going to do with 75% of the working population with no work to do -? Automation will increase and become self-perpetuating in that robots will make robots to do almost all the jobs most of us do today. Therefore the working week (was 48hrs now 35hrs soon to be 25hrs) will eventually not exist for the majority and 'exercise' (vital from a health pov) will have to be found for the rest. Something along the lines of 'community projects' for which each participant will receive 'credits' to add to their monthly 'state credits' etc etc etc. Another form of subsistence for the people. This scenario brings forth a multitude of problems all of which will have to be solved by governments as they immerse themselves in the cy-botic revolution. But 'we' the people will not be required in the numbers required for the industrial or techno revolutions and therein lies the rub - - - - - . And you thought there was a problem. There is - it will be called 'people'.

People; too many of them, is a problem. Most people are too polite to say so, but, eventually it will have to be said. What sort of people though? Todays citizens are not like the 'navvies' that dug out the canals.

The leisured classes will need more exercise if robots take their jobs. It would be useful if a holiday company kept a small fleet of boats and offered rowing holidays. With medium sized boats being rowed around the coastline of the UK to regular timetables in the summer, paying passengers could have scenic cruises. It could take some pressure off the road network.

That and a thousand other scenarios. Imagine, if you can, 75% of the working age population requiring some form of 'occupation'. Man does not live, for long, on bread alone. He is required to keep his brain active. With machines, which will do the digging on a computerised plan of work, alongside there will be the 'enhancements to the projects'. It is those that humans will provide. Voluntary will become 'occupational therapy' for which 'extra credits' can be obtained as required. Imagine no homeless because there will be others to attend to it. No starving. No dereliction. No pollutions. A minimum of anti-social behaviour. All because there will be the willing operatives glad to be doing something useful instead of jobs they hate. Machines can do all that for us always and providing we have governance that can switch the resources and wealth distribution to the best overall advantage. But - - there is a danger - in fact more than one -. Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink
