Re: Further council cuts
The vast majority of foreign this country gives, goes to people who are in a far worse situation than any "Mabel" in this country. And the amount is a very tiny part of the overall budget. Lets cut the billions wasted on defence. Defence should be renamed, the occupation of other countries budget.
The real problem is the diversion of our taxes towards the well off away from the poor, elderly, sick, young etc and to providers of services to the poor, coupled with the REFUSAL to tackle massive tax avoidance of at least £80 Billion a year. Also this country is subsidising privateers in areas such as health, education and rail. As an example the money given to the rail operators is massively more than what was given to British Rail.
It worries and angers me that the council are proposing more privatisation otherwise known as outsourcing of council services. I bet the services will in the end either save no money in the end, or will result in a far worse service given to tax payers, as is the case of the majority of outsourcing/privatisations locally and nationally.

Well, I know of a 'Mabel' whose care time has already been cut.
90 odd years old and housebound with no near family, she is allowed 15 minutes help each morning, 1 hour a week to help with laundry and 1 more hour a week for shopping, BUT the shopping hour has now been removed.

And that is happening to many of our elderly & most vulnerable Charly it is those who are suffering the most many of them have no family to turn to either !

Re: Further council cuts
We seem to have drifted away from the start of this thread which quite properly questioned whether councillors in receipt of additional allowances deserve them.

Re: Further council cuts
Threads, like conversations often do go off subject.
Plus I think its an example of showing what happens at the butt end of the council money

I agree and it is truly awful and so wrong.

Re: Further council cuts
All the same, it might have been well-received by the Council Tax-payer to have seen proposals for reducing the number of councillors and/or a reduction in the Councillors Allowance being mentioned.
After all, the elderly, disabled, sick and homeless are all going to feel the weight of the council cosh. Why should councillors themselves be exempted?
This is good strategy as it goes some way to answering later accusations of 'snouts in the trough' or 'jobs for the boys' etc.

Re: Further council cuts
Perhaps we should start a blog like http://dog-shaming.com/
Only we should name ours Council Shaming? Or take it wider and name it Westminster Shaming and let the 'have-nots' in this country shame the "haves".
Mind you... some people have no shame

Absolutely. I wonder how many of the very well paid directors of managers will see salary cuts and or job losses.
I would cut the councillors to two per ward and have all outs next year.

Well she won't be getting any more. As she is thinking of starting an over 70's glee club one suspects her time at the computer will hencforth be somewhat restricted being too busy with her clients. Is that not so charly?

Re: Further council cuts
Well you can see what is going on in Greece and Spain and erupting into street violence during protest. I think it may happen in the UK and the worse since the trouble over the Poll Tax and during the miners strike.
The coalition are storing a load of trouble for themselves in the near future I think.

Re: Further council cuts
And if so will do about as much good as it has done in Greece and Spain which is zilch - other than cost a small fortune in policing and new anti-riot gear and weapons. How intelligent is that? I will agree that it is not the fault of many of the young that are taking to the streets. They have been badly let down by indolence, arrogance and criminal activities. Perhaps now they will begin to realise that the world doesn't owe them a living. Nothing is for free and everything has to be eventually paid for. Perhaps their secondary schooling should include some of the things we were taught. You want to eat you have to work for it - and even then it may be a meagre meal. Stamping one's feet when the horse has bolted don't get it back in the stable.
