BBC Director General resigns
"So George Entwistle has resigned as Director General of the BBC. This is just like when all those tabloid bosses resigned after falsely accusing Chris Jefferies of murdering Jo Yeates."-Newsthump Facebook. I agree.
And what about all those MPs etc who make mistakes. Newspapers and politicians in the main are hypocrites on this issue.

We all make mistakes. The penalty usually depends on the size of the mistake

A masterpiece hatchet-job by John Humphries on the Today programme.
However, I am not convinced that the newly-appointed DG was the right man to go. His replacement seems to be a poor, uninspiring and wholly inexperienced choice.
Newsnight has long been one of my favourite programmes but I don't see how it can survive. Certainly, as a minimum, a whole new editorial team needs to be brought in.
You'd have thought in the wake of their involvement in the Savile fiasco, they'd have stayed well clear of kiddie-fiddling items.

Why has Lord Patton not gone from his job as Chairman? He has been in his position throughout.
I genuinely believe that the media and many politicians are using this opportunity to dig the knife into the BBC, especially government politicians.

Is there not a difference in roles? George Entwhistle was resonsible for the day-to-day running and Chris. Patton is responsible for the overall direction of the BBC.
If Chris Patton was to go as well, where would the continuity be? If both were to go at the same time the BBC would be totally rudderless.

I don't see that as reason to stay just for continuation. If Patton is responsible in any way for the mistakes, then he should consider his own future, other wise we might have the continuation of mistakes being made. Besides it was NOT the BBC who identified (wrongly in this particular case) Mc Alpine, it was the police, so why no criticism of them?
The politicians, establishment and their friends in the gutter press are using the BBC mistakes as a cover. The BBC need to FULLY investigate all these matters and find out who was responsible for these crimes. To do this it would be better for them to have an independent Chair.
The following make good points

One view on the problems of the BBC is that funding for investigative journalism and other things that contribute to the quality of programs has been cut, and at the same time salaries for fat cats has either not been cut or increased. This seems to be a similar story in many organisations. People at the top on big salaries, who for some unaccountable reason have no idea about what they are being paid be responsible for.

Investigative journalism at the BBC... ah, I remember that. I wonder what happened to it?
Also remember the great Sunday Times 'Insight Team' before Murdoch got his hands on the paper.
What passes for 'investigation' is now reduced to a couple of blokes on a bike catching out cowbow builders or ex-cons exposing benefit 'fraudsters'.
'Panorama' is a shadow of its former self and has exchanged hard-hitting TV journalism by an experienced, respected team for kitting out a couple of barely-articulate college-kids with miniature cameras and sending them out to do their worst in the local care home, hospital or security company.
It might just pass muster as poor quality 'fly on the wall' semi-documentary but it certainly isn't investigative journalism.
Of course, Roger Cook started the downturn with his inept, bumbling, semi-inebriated and oh-so-predictable style.

Reflect upon this as you next pay your license fee.
It used to go on quality programming rather than incompetency bonuses for its executives.

Re: BBC Director General resigns
It’s that old adage you do not employ someone with more intellect than yourself when your jobs are so entangled. Chris Patton is in that position. As long as Patton picks them we are going to get idiots running the BBC.
The idea that the head of the BBC has no idea of such a controversial program going out on air with the name of someone like Alpine involved in such deeds is just too silly to contemplate. Rather like the driver of 10.30 train heading for Scotland being told they removed his brakes by mistake when he’s halfway there. I don’t think he actually read the notice on his desk in his 50 odd days in the job (The Buck stops here).
