Sir Patrick Moore
Died today. What a great man. He brought astronomy to millions and inspired thousands to study the space sciences.

Met him once at Burnely Mechanics and he signed a book for me. He definitely got me into astronomy.
He met both Louis Bleriot AND Neil Armstrong.

True British character
A fine scientist, almost single-handedly inspiring many generations into academic and amateur study of astronomy, physics and appreciation of some of the wonders of the universe, as well as promoting telescope sales.
He even lied about his age to get into the RAF, where he served as a bomber navigator in WW2.
I also I heard him speak about 15 years ago, and had a book signed by him.

Tis sad but a fact of life. He had a cracking innings and no doubt regreted nothing - hopefully.

Re: Sir Patrick Moore
I watched his last "Sky at Night" a few days a go. He was challenging the astronomic world about the possibility of water on Mercury. Typical of the man. I loved the man and his programmes. I suppose some of his political beliefs and attitude would otherwise have driven me mad but I could forgive him because he was so enthusiastic and dynamic.
An institution and a joy to behold. He leaves a huge gap.

Sir Patrick Moore was a man of integrity and independent thought. Accused of being a politically incorrect dinosaur he replied "I may be accused of being a dinosaur, but I would remind you that dinosaurs ruled the Earth for a very long time."
