An interesting view!
Some of 'em certainly don't have a very high opinion of us.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Let's be honest. Valentine's Day is an orgy of rampant consumerism. It provides relief for the hard of thinking and has little to redeem it other than generation of profit. Whether or not it is pagan derived isn't really relevant since there is no more truth in the pagan than there is in the holy.
Purity of spirit is about what you do and Central Mosque would be better preaching against real evils within its community rather than raising panic over half forgotten fairy tales.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
So no roses, champagne or card for Tinkerbell then you miserable old git?
Whatever the origins of Val's Day, there are worse things to celebrate than love. We turn up for military parades at the drop of a hat.
Anyway, I got a card and a Toblarone out of it. Long live love and chocolate say I!

Muslim opinion on Valentines day seems to vary throughout different countries, between thinking it's good for business and that it must be eradicated. The Rochdale mosque seems to be towards the disapproval end of that spectrum.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Well I know what most Muslim corner shopkeepers and newsagents think of it. Bloody wonderful. Stocked up to the rafters with cards, chocolates etc.
The one I bought Mrs H's card from is run by a lovely chap called Emra who was wearing a glowing heart badge and tried to sell me one as well but as she works for Pennine, she'd probably have been disciplined for wearing it.
You can't have nurses and midwives with hearts. Perish the thought!
(I hope Muslim Forum members won't be offended by the Valentine's Day 'skin'.)

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Does it really matter johnB?
I have had a Valentines card, the one that does matter and it is harmless at the end of the day. Why is it like Christmas we always have to have the kill joys out. About time some people got a life.
I am still waiting for the rest of the Valentine cards. Must be caught up in the post somewhere.
So I hope you treated your love one to some flowers and a card JohnB. So have a heart mate.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
I've no issues with the celebrations - Mrs Tinkerbell may not have had a card, but will shortly be sitting down to seafood linguine - cooked by my far from fair hand.
I object to the rampant commercialism and the commerce in useless things for no purpose.
I suspect the mosque's view and reasoning is much, much darker.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
I have read the website concerned. There is a shop in Milnrow that is run by a very nice Muslim family. They have something up about a prayer showing their faith but also running it with selling Christmas cards at Christmas and selling Valentine cards and birthday cards. So they do not have a problem with it or anyone else. Helping to serve the community with everyone from their shop, no mattter who you are.
Just the way it should be and live and let live.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Your post at 9.21 pm is about business Teamplayer, as exampled by the shops selling alcohol run by Muslims. They do not have a problem selling it, despite alcohol consumption being very clearly forbidden in Islamic theology.
The point seems to be that St Valentine's Day, celebrating Romance, is a bad Western cultural abberation that is anti-Islamic and should be shunned by all Muslims, as should 'Santa'

Alright then then can shun it if they like, but leave the rest of us to get on with it.

That's not the case Jeanie. It's becoming a visibly demonstrated majority view in many Muslim Countries. Read the Reuters reports about it.
As Teamplayer commented, some Muslims here may choose to shun it, but should leave others alone to follow a custom that is seen as one of Romantic expressions

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Look at the link/picture that Cyfrifia posted where they are doing what they do best and demonstrating on the street by setting fire to some fabric with the words 'Valentines Day'.
Doesn't take much to get them into a lather does it? it's a good job the 'grooming' situation hasn't been inflicted on their girls by white men is all I can say, and I make no apologies for that comment as it's how I see it.

It does seem particularly insensitive and inappropriate for Rochdale Mosque to be running an anti-valentines day campaign in the circumstances.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
I just wondered if it was the other way round and a Christian religion was knocking something in the Muslim religion. Would the Muslims be reporting this as religious hate and racism and report it to the Police?
Also expecting all local politicians to condemn it and expect the offending material to be removed with a full apology?
I presume all religions have the same right to be treated under the Anti-Discrimination laws including Paganism.

Re: Valentine's Day: A Muslim slant
Perhaps it is time to turn away from these tired, Christian or pre-Christian rituals and turn to some more culturally acceptable forms of expressing our faith and deeper emotions?
In this respect, perhaps the Mustafa Islamic Centre in Rochdale might lead by way of example as this video clip illustrates:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TK4sbfcPsM
Note: this is the same Islamic Centre at the heart of the planning row. (No sick jokes about wanting a 'whip-round' to fund the extension please!)

No surprise then that they don't want windows in that ridiculous extension on Fishwick Street!

Crikey, I've been wasting my money at those special clubs when I could watch for free on youtube!

I think they are whipping themselves with razors Nicki. Never mind three parking spots, they might need places for ambulances as well.
The HIV implications on their own are a nightmare.
Still, boys will be boys.

And this is in the name of religion? I don't think I'll ever get that

Strange indeed but some Catholics go in for it of course.
