What dreadful news. I had not realised Ann was so ill. She was a lovely lady and an excellent councillor. A tragic loss.

Re: Ann Metcalfe
I have written a piece for Rochdale Online who are preparing a tribute on her. It shoulds be online later today.
She became suddenly and unexpectedly ill just before Christmas. We used to talk and email every week and I often called in for coffee and Jaffa cakes on my way home from work.. I feel her loss very deeply.
Sorry Ann, I know you tried several times to get me to go to Masonic dinners but that was several steps too far for this former trade union activist!

Beautiful words, Hinch.
I am deeply saddened by Ann's death. So many of us thought and hoped that her determination would get her through the treatment to at least a good many more years. May she rest in peace.

I should also pay tribute to Fr. Paul Daly, another good friend of Ann's who gave very valued support to Ann during her final illness as she told me in our last conversation two weeks ago.

Ann was brought to the Town Hall today escorted by the Mayor then taken home for her funeral tomorrow it was so upsetting yet lovely,a very fitting tribute to a very special Lady.
God Bless and Rest in Peace Ann a very Dear friend so loved and so very sadly missed xxx.

A lovely funeral. 250-300 there. Forum members; past and present included me, Heywoodpp, Jeanie, Ian Duckworth, Greg Couzens, Angela Coric (Angie Baby). Ann was laid to rest on her farm in a wicker casket.
Full report on RO later.
Sleep well old friend. Sorry about the Masons.

Have to take my titfer off to HPP, he conducted a brill service in the teeth of a biting snow flurry. He really gave a moving and witty tribute.
Never thought I'd see an RC priest swinging the incense-thingie and Holy water round at Rough Lea.

Ann had a brilliant turn out and deeply moving service full of humour and sentiments of her life. It was bitterly cold though thought we were going to get snowed in at one point
Heywood pp gave Ann a truly lovely service as you so rightly say Hinch.

Re: Ann Metcalfe
Most of the credit has to go to Ann. She knew exactly what she wanted and, although she made it clear that she hoped not to have to call on my services for a while longer, she still wanted to make plans. And her daughters and Alan knew her so well that they filled in any gaps.
One I wanted to say but didn't manage to fit in were about the way that, whenever I met her, as I came away, the day was somehow brighter and I felt better in myself.
I nearly blew myself up on the way back however. The still hot thurible (incense thingy) was in a metal bowl on the passenger seat floor of the car. As I drove down the narrow and winding Ashworth Rd I noticed a funny smell and looked down to see the cardboard cover of the large box of matches sitting underneath the thurible and beginning to smoulder. My instinct was to reach down to the well of the passenger seat which nearly sent me through the very fence that Ann had fought to get replaced!

You sure you said everything in the way Ann wanted?
It might have been her way of telling you something, she had a good sense of humour
