Re: Sharia Law
Setting the religious and cultural arguments to one side, I am wholly opposed to any legal or quasi-legal structure that seeks to promote inequality of any sort. The Law Society is way off target here.
Orthodox Jews also use rabbinical courts in which women are treated far less favourably than men.
Thin end of a much thicker wedge. Women have fought for years and are still fighting for equality, as the court rulings against Birmingham City Council have shown. The last thing we need is for a parallel legal system to drag us back a couple of centuries.
All political parties should oppose this vociferously and our MPs and councillors should go on record with their views; whatever their cultural origins.
All 'legislation' that discriminates should be held to be incompatible with UK law and the HRA and the findings of these 'courts' be unenforceable, even if the parties agree to be bound by their decisions.

Re: Sharia Law
Sounds like a quiet, perhaps largely un-noticed, but fundamental turning point in law for the UK, changing rules of inheritance, excluding non-believers in Islam, which will have long term, permanent effect on culture and society.
If Princess Diana had married Hasnat Ahmad Khan, or Dodi Fayed and lived longer, and either of those two potential husbands had made Sharia compliant wills, would Willam and Harry, as unbelievers, have lost their inheritance?

Re: Sharia Law
The terrorist execution of cartoonists and police in Paris may be understood as intending to impose Islamic Sharia law on France by means of murderous force.
A reasonable response, in the UK, with the intention of keeping the peace in the long run, would be to halt, reverse and extinguish the progress and acceptance of Sharia law within the UK.
UK citizens are protected by UK law whatever their religion. Any foreign system of law imposed by means of murder and assassination is unacceptable. As we have apparently chosen to be subject to European law, the same must apply throughout Europe.
