Just another nail, or the final one?

Such a shame, one of the few really decent shops in Yorkshire street. Driven out by high rates and low footfall. I wonder if the Town Planners/Council etc have any views. Perhaps RO (are you reading this?!!) should ask for their opinion. Bet they dont even get a reply.

Probably not the only shop forced to close because of high rates. No, actually, I know its another shop as thats why my daughter lost her job when Toni& Guy closed its doors. Due to stupidly high rates etc.
Its the one step nearer to the final nail in the coffin when it comes to quality shops in Rochdale. How many left now that are not tat, charity and phone shops. I doubt we are in double figures. We only have M&S , Boots, Game, Smiths, River Island. Not good is it.
As for Rochdale Council et all. We will not get any answers as they are hell bent on building even more retail space despite the fact we have two half empty centres and one of them is in receivership. They have no chance what so ever of filling it up.
You could not make it up.

and don't forget Metrolink's decision to decimate business on Drake Street. Why those works have taken so long is a complete mystery.

Indeed it is a mystery as to why, But lets be honest Drake Street was alreayd on the way to a sorry state long before Metro came along. But whilst we are on the subject of Metro it is a mystery as to why RMBC rolled over at the first hurdle and lead to the binning of the Wet Rake stop. Which doesnt help either.

It depends what they intend to do about renovation in the St Johns area. The stop may not be too close to the town centre, but it is too close to the station, particularly when that stop is half way along Maclure Road.

So the question needs to be asked, why the Council invested in a café within his shop and what will happen to it now?

Definitely I went to the grand opening of the cafe' ,just so sad the boutique is going but then again they didn't support these shops regarding parking issues and still allowing the clinic to take up valuable spaces again granting them permission to stay , I did speak out on this when I was in council which again was over ruled by the current leader !

Watch RO in the next couple of weeks as this 'unusual' set up is being scrutinised.Hinch wrote:southernbelle wrote:http://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/news-features/1/business-news/79575/award-winning-boutique-closes-its-doors-in-rochdale-for-the-final-time

Well that was the excuse trotted out to the Council by MPT. However, its not quite true. The stop at Maclure Road is opposite the Health Centre not quite half way along (sorry to be padantic). MPT used the over lapping of two stops as the reason. However I did point out that the Victoria Station and Shude Hill stops in Manchester are a lot closer than Wet Rake and Rochdale Train Station. Not to mention Smith Street/Rochdale Metro stop. Plus when the stop is built opposite the Corn Exchange in Manchester as part of the second line cross Manchester that will be closer still as the crow flies than our currently built stops.
I did also read that the Council then launched an appeal against the descision not long after the Wet Rake stop was binned off. Wonder what happened to that?

Sorry Southernbelle I started another post on the shop closing. I did not see your post until now so I have deleted mine seeing as though you already started a post.
Yes it is shame and looked a real class shop. The sort of shop Rochdale needs. Looking at the business reasons it is not holding much for the rest.

I’m surprised to read a current definition that the building incorporates one of the town centre's most popular cafes “The Feel Good Cafe.” ------ Wonder what the privately-run coffee shop/café at the new council offices, portrayed as making this pristine new build an attractive social setting, will be offering the general public as their weekly opening hours?
Rochdale town centre management Chief Executive, Debbie O'Brien, described in the media as a founder of Rochdale Emporium, was recently reported as saying the Emporium would remain open on the 1st floor of the building, despite the closure of the 25Ten Boutique, and that it’s business as usual for their tenants there and the Feel Good Cafe inside !

I am sure the landlord will be interested in all this - a sub-letting continuing when the main tenant has exited the lease, or is there something I am missing?

johnb: When a local estate agent originally advertised that the whole property of 87-89 Yorkshire Street was available To Let, it did add " May Split."
Whether that meant for Lease purposes, or for separate retail trading, wasn't made clear on their advertisement; don't know how these matters work

Perhaps Debbie O'Brien can produce an audio-visual presentation portraying it as a tour de force. I'm sure the 'Rochdale Past and Present' site will be prepared to talk it up?

A landlord whose 'main tenant has done a bunk will continue to take whatever he can get from the premises no doubt on the understanding that the sub-tenant may have to vacate the premises should he find himself another leasee who requires the whole. On the other hand the sub-tenant may be granted a 'split-tenancy' should the new tenants not require the 'whole' thus providing the leasor with his full requirements. It's simple really. Nothing new in any of that - or illegal.

I should imagine such a busy, bustling shopping centre would be sold within days when prospective buyers see all the quality shops in there

The queues have started to form already.

Great! I hope this means that we get a few more stalls selling sports bags on our wonderful market and perhaps a few more phone shops as the choice is so limited at present.

All that would depend on whether the new owners changed the centre management or left the current management and policy in place.
In my book, something needs to be done because what we have does not work.
