In a move criticised as "jobs for the boys", the controlling Labour group on Rochdale Borough Council voted to double the size of the Council Cabinet by creating Assistant Portfolio Holders and paying each a further £2,500 'Special Responsibility Allowance' on top of the allowance they already receive as a councillor.

The bigger scandal on this issue is that the Labour Party raided the Pressures Fund to find the money for this. The fund is supposed to deal with emergencies and unforeseen events. What the hell is an emergency or unforeseen about the fact that Labour Cabinet members needs somebody to carry their bags?

Perhaps it means you need two Labour councillors to do the work of one from any other party?

It's probably more akin to the stories about the KGB being paired up while on duty - not to help them do their job better but so that they could watch and report on each other.
