They must all be here....in sunny Belfield!!! I don't feed the birds because I have 2 cats but, they are in abundance next door but one and next door but 3!
Though we do back on to woods.

Where are all the birds? Interesting Jeanie. I use to have all sorts of wild life coming into my garden. A lot have gone. Though there was a mention on the tv about the plight of the Bee's.
I think there is something serious going on but not just in gardens either. Has the human race gone too far with Mother Nature and started a run of events that will come back to bite us in the end?

Re: Were have they gone ?
I have no idea "where they have all gone". There are plenty in my garden. I am no expert but I do not feed birds in the summer because I have read that at this time of the year they should be eating their natural prey eg insects, grubs, larvae etc and that young birds in particular should not be given anything else.

Your advice is sound in its principal. It does no harm however to supplement their diet with the odd fat-ball or nuts/seed etc for the parent birds who work extremely hard at feeding their young the 'natural' food quite often at the expense of themselves - ergo - it helps the parent birds to remain in good condition.
My swallows have had a second family - another five young - all healthy and two to three weeks away from fledging. Quite a show they put on inside the signal box - specially for the punters.

Re: Were have they gone ?
Birds go quieter in the summertime after they have finished their courtship and territorial singing and displays, and have empty nest syndrome.
Those who have tried it will tell, it's never easy to survive on a diet of worms and insects even in the summer. A drought will drive the worms down deeper, and pecking them out is not so easy. It's hard work flying in torrential rain. It can generally be a hard life for birds, so giving them a cheese sandwich now and then seems ok. They appreciate a cup of water when it's scorching weather.
A world without birds would be a sad one, so those people who feed and look out for them are doing a good job.

Cannot disagree with any of the above and bird welfare will always come first. I am still concerned that young birds in particular will get the wrong diet at what for them is an important growing time.
Adults may benefit but most will do what comes naturally which is to feed their young.
I reiterate I am a long way from being an expert. I am thinking of the birds. Will see what the internet says.

Well said indeed ! my Blackbirds are coming back they nested in my garden last year, still a bit quiet though !
I do have to keep chasing a very nasty new cat on the block out of my garden so I think he is the culprit
