Yes DL, it was his most endearing quality. One could well have understood it had he come out of jail seeking revenge and retribution but he didn't, although I'm not entirely convinced that truth and reconciliation is the solution in all cases.
Such a pity that South Africa is so riddled with problems and corruption but none of this is his fault.
I find all the Tories queuing up to pay sanctimonious tribute a bit difficult to chew on given Thatcher's stance on apartheid but that's politics I guess. I have a white Rhodesian mate who still sees him as the devil incarnate!
Undoubtedly one of the 20th century's greatest figures and arguably, the greatest African of all time. He was almost on a par with Ghandi in my book.

Great man though he undoubtedly was, I am getting a bit fed up with interviewees trying to outdo each other by recounting in ever glowing detail the effect that Mr Mandela had on them personally. Bush, Blair and Clinton were particularly unconvincing in this respect. Obviously he didn't convince them not to go to war.
I confidently await the headline, "Nelson Mandela cured me of cancer."

Me too. I just hope that vile, shady homophobe, who currently preens in leading / plunging South Africa deeper into violence, poverty and corruption, somehow becomes sidelined from the public memorial service(s and funeral.
Will Zuma’s present eulogies and stage management deflect from his own future impeachment for diverting £14.5 million of state (Aid money?) money to upgrade just one of his private homes? As a self-proclaimed licentious ‘Zulu-boy,’ involved in grotesque charades and sleaze, the man embodies the now-befouled ANC that has putrefied from within.
One of the tragedies of the last decade and Mandela’s death has been the absence of a credible political heir of moral and intellectual leadership - a philanthropist and catalyst.
I believe that Mandela's greatest feat was working to save the country from a massive bloodbath, including chronic tribal violences, from 1993 – 1999 that included his own 2-term Presidency.
Perhaps the most substantial part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy is symbolic ..
I've never understood what appears to be general low interest in South African developments. Maybe it's because they've no significant Oil / Gas supplies of international concern !

A well constructed, informed and incisive post MJH. I wish that Mr Mandela had done more to speak out against ANC members who were involved in corruption of this sort as his words, even in retirement, would have carried great weight.
Zuma is a national disgrace.
