Bananas: the new nimbys!
I love clever acronyms. We used to call objectors to the building of local windfarms etc as 'nimbys'. (Not In My Backyard). Now they are being referred to as 'Bananas'. (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything).
No doubt the building of Scout Moor Wind Farm and various fracking proposals will see a healthy crop of these around?

Well that confused me totally.
As Metro Trams have been referred to Bananas.

To complicate things even further Chill, yesterday's Indie carried a huge photo of bananas on its front page with an accompanying story about the TR4 fungus from Panama that is threatening to devastate the world banana crop.

A possible sad end to a great fruit. Where would the Great British Comedy of the 40s, 50s and 60s have been without it?
Have a banana.

Re: Bananas: the new nimbys!
This is probably to do with all commercial bannanas being genetically similar, taken from cuttings, not quite cloned but a similar effect, so one disease affects them all. Didn't something similar happen with grapes, vinyards had to replace with different plants, but kept quiet about it. There are other varieties of bannanas that can be bred to replace, but it may be quite a job. Bannanas have never been as good since they started shipping them in helium. Windward Islands are the best bannanas if you can get them.

Re: Bananas: the new nimbys!
Perhaps this new type of banana with 3 N's that you mention could well be the answer Cyfrifia!

Wasnt there also an article about a 'killer' spider jumping out of bananas at a Primary School in Rochale over the weekend?

[size=18There's a fruit shop down the street
t’s run by a Greek,
And he sells good things to eat,
But you should hear him speak,
When you ask him anything,
Never answers “No”,
He just yesses you to death,
And as he takes your dough he tells you:
Refrain:
Yes! We have no bananas,
We have no bananas today.
We’ve stringbeans, and onions,
Cabbages and scallions
And all kind of fruit, and say,
We have an old fashioned tomato
Long Island potato,
But yes! We have no bananas,
We have no bananas today!
Things were going well with him,
He wrote home to say,
Send me Mike and Pete and Jim,
I need them right away,
When he got them in the shop,
There was fun, you bet,
‘Cause when you asked them anything,
They answered in quartet: Oh,
Refrain:
Yes! We have no bananas,
We have no bananas today.
We’ve stringbeans, and onions,
Cabbages and scallions
And all kind of fruit, and say,
We have an old fashioned tomato
Long Island potato,
But yes! We have no bananas,
We have no bananas today!]

Everyone gets some things wrong. Sometimes I spell banana with a double n, bannana. Every now and then, someone points out the error, but, I don't mind, as it doesn't matter.

And, the bannana spelling reflects the true pronunciation, ban-nana. (Never start a sentence with and).
What does matter though, is what those who depend on the bannana crop for food and income can do in the short term. Is there a food plant that grows well and quickly in the same conditions?

Maybe the price we pay should be doubled and make sure they get double pay.

Re: Bananas: the new nimbys!
Maybe. That would help the lucky ones whose bannana crop escapes disease. The concern though is for where it fails, and for those who rely on bannanas as a cheap local food. A replacement food crop might be the most practical.

Re: Bananas: the new nimbys!
Indeed. A new crop will have to be found to replace the plantations should a remedy not be quickly found. Having said that it should come as no surprise to our species that such 'trauma's' will eventually come our way, and that of all other species, as the world (planet) evolves and new 'species' are formed. I believe at least half a dozen new 'organisms' are discovered every week. Many are mutations of existing others completely unknown to us. T'is the way of the 'game' we are all embarked upon. Who/what will win is unknown. But I can assure everyone on here. It won't be us. Fair fortune.
