13 'Life' sentences = 8 years
Been following the Skullcracker case with mounting disbelief. How the f*** can 13 life sentences pan out at 8 years, some of those in an open nick?
Good God, the sentence is less than a slap on the wrist. This chap should be on a whole life tariff.
I despair.

I'm surprised you are surprised, Hinch. With your interest in news and journalism, and general life experience. Sentences and way the prison system is run has been a fiasco for quite some years.

The police / magistrates' bail and HMP parole systems seem due for major overhauls, which Hull's chief Judge has repeatedly advocated for.
'Skull-Cracker' Wheatley was given 13 life sentences at the Old Bailey in 2002, convicted for a series of crimes committed over just a 10 month period in 2001-2002 – while he was out of prison “on parole” from a 27-year sentence that he’d previously been given in 3 separate sentences for other violent robberies.

Whenever arrested by police, it seems he lists his occupation as an "armed robber". In March 2002 he pistol whipped a 73-year-old woman during one of his violent robberies.

A closed nick for a few more years? Perhaps removal of his colour TV? Maybe a few anger management sessions and a bit of psychological support?

The law has developed too much towards protection of property. Violence against the person needs to be taken much more seriously in law.

English law was always based on property and commerce from its beginnings in medieval times.
Concepts of offences against the person developed much later.
Train robbers get far harsher punishment than murderers. 30 years for robbing a train, 8 years for 11 life sentences.

Law to protect property was of more interest to those with a lot of property, medieval barons and kings. For ordinary poor people, law that protects them from being whacked round the head etc. is more useful.

But the law doesn't protect you from getting whacked round the head...
There has to be a reasonable chance of detection, prosecution and conviction before there is any deterrence. Without that, no matter how heavy the sentence, the crime is worth the risk.

Well perhaps it needs slightly re-arranging so that it does.
