Jobless women
"A group of MP's have warned black and minority ethnic women face 'catastrophic' levels of unemployment and are discriminated against at 'every stage' of the recruitment process."
I have never agreed with the little tick boxes on forms asking your ethnic origin, maybe if this was taken off forms it would give everyone a fair crack of the whip.
I know its supposedly used for research purposes to make sure whatever it may be is reaching all members of the community...or is it?
Surely we should all be treated the same?

Re: Jobless women
When I used to enrol students on adult education courses I came across lots of people who objected to giving the information, I always advised them to leave it blank if they so wished.

Re: Jobless women
This might well be the case in private industry, not so in the Council I can assure you.
Having said that, recruitment should not be clouded by 'ethnicity' ..... one way or the other!

Re: Jobless women
Surely the MP's report suggests that black and ethnic women aren't getting a fair crack of the whip? Even with all the box ticking this isn't happening. Are you suggesting that by removing the tick boxes more people will employ black and ethnic women?Charly wrote:"A group of MP's have warned black and minority ethnic women face 'catastrophic' levels of unemployment and are discriminated against at 'every stage' of the recruitment process."

Re: Jobless women
If employers are discriminating now, why should that change because a box hasn't been ticked?

Yes we should. This box should be removed just like the 'age' box has been removed.

Re: Jobless women
The tick boxes are annoying, mainly because nobody feel confident that sort of information will be used to any good effect.

Yes Dalelad, beat me to the post there, I somehow doubt the tick makes any kind of difference in the long run.

Re: Jobless women
Should they? Government uses data about ethnic origin to make policy decisions.

Re: Jobless women
When people apply for jobs, any equal opportunity forms are separated-or should be, from the main application form. They are only used for monitoring. By removing monitoring of the situation, it would only make the situation worse, not better.
By monitoring, the government and other organisations can know which groups need help in assessing the Labour market etc. After all, we wouldn't want to call jobless women, scroungers, would we now? Most of wouldn't but some would.
The only thing that needs removing, is discrimination against anyone due to their, sex, race, age etc. To think that women are still the victims of discrimination is disgusting.

Re: Jobless women
There is a difference between discriminating against, and discriminating in favor of. Positive discrimination.

Both are wrong and illegal.

Wrong possibly, but illegal? That gets very complicated and would depend.

Re: Jobless women
I admit that I may well be wrong calling positive discrimination illegal. Am looking in to it.

Re: Jobless women
Just checked. Positive discrimination IS indeed illegal. Positive action is not. Positive action is where 2 applicants have the same abilities for a job but if there is for instance a gender imbalance in the company they can employ the person who represents the under represented sex.

Re: Jobless women
It is accepted certain jobs can only be done by men or by women. The wording 'active employment discrimination' matters in law, and, there is a similar situation to the votes for prisoners question where UK law clashes with EU law. Companies registered in the EU may have different legal status particularly for boardroom jobs, women bishops are another exception, ageist discrimination is rife, and so it goes on, the law and it's application on discrimination is not clear cut, as I found out when I applied to be an Avon lady.

Re: Jobless women
Yes indeed there are exemptions in the employment law to cover such things. For instance in Women's refuges, they can employ women only. But in general positive or negative discrimination are against the law.
