Never thought I'd hear it. Out of respect for the deceased I will say nothing further on this today for an hour or so.
Mind you, she and her sort never showed me or any of my class any respect.

She is nearer your class than all the political leaders of today.

All the more reason for her to have treated us with something approaching respect then!

She was at least honest about what she did. Try saying that about Callaghan or Blair.

She was honest JohnB! Look at what we have today. Though out of respect to her family should we be leaving all this for another day for a debate.

Re: The Iron Lady
So you don't remember the rubbish stacked head high and the bodies unburied in the mortuaries during the 'winter of discontent' then?
The unions thought they could roll her as they had done the two previous governments. I wish a spirit of cooperation had been operated before she came to power - then there would have been no need for what followed.

Re: The Iron Lady
Peter Wylie's famous song:-
WHEN MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THERE WILL BE NO TEARS
SAVE YOUR SORROW FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SHE STOMPED FOR YEARS
SHE TORTURED NORTH OF WATFORD WITH A VICIOUS HATE
SO WHEN MARGARET THATCHER DIES
LET'S CELEBRATE
and i say
HEY HO
HERE WE GO
TELL EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
SHE'S GONE!
COLOUR ME WITH LOVE
BUILD A BONFIRE
PAINT THE SKY
COME ON DOWN
I'LL TELL YOU WHY.
SHE'S GONE!
AND NOBODY CRIES...
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
YOU WANNA GIVE HER A STATE FUNERAL?
WELL THAT'S JUST GREAT.
IRONIC,COS SHE LEFT US IN A SORRY STATE
I PROTEST!
IT'S MONEY WASTED
BUILD A SCHOOL INSTEAD
THE ONLY REASON THAT I'LL GO IS TO MAKE SURE SHE'S DEAD...
HEY HO
HERE WE GO
TELL EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
SHE'S GONE!
COLOUR ME WITH LOVE
BUILD A BONFIRE
PAINT THE SKY
COME ON DOWN
I'LL TELL YOU WHY.
SHE'S GONE!
AND NOBODY CRIES...
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
THE DAY THAT MARGARET THATCHER DIES
IF YOU SAY MONEY'S ALL THAT MATTERS
THEN YOU'LL PAY A PRICE
DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU DO
YOU'LL KILL TO GET A SLICE
COS THE WICKED WITCH OF WESTMINSTER
LEFT AN EVIL CURSE.
NOW IT'S DOWN TO THATCHER'S CHILDREN
AND IT'S GETTING WORSE!
HEY HO
HERE WE GO

OK Johnb I will not leave it for another day then.
Do you remember all the communities and areas that were devastated due to to her confrontation with the trade unions!
Also a lot of these towns and villages never recovered.

Re: The Iron Lady
I remember clearly. If Arthur Scargill had not picked an unconstitutional fight he couldn't hope to win (weather, coal stocks, mood of he nation) they would probably still be there. First the steel workers, then the postal workers and then the miners chose to fight a war - that they, not the elected government ran the country, called the shots. We would have been in a far worse position if they had won.

Re: The Iron Lady
So are we any better off now JohnB with all the poverty and cutbacks we are having. All the misery that is being put against the working public of this country and the rich getting richer. Are we on the same planet as the Tories and their lap dog the Lib Dems!
Yes we are still seeing Thatchers legacy.

I suspect we would have been ten times worse, like Greece or Portugal, if the unions had won.

Re: The Iron Lady
Not what was done - - but the way it was done. Do the ends ever justify the means? Are good intentions never the pathway to hell? I have always advocated moderation and patience in all things. Give time to pursue the problem properly before acting in order that the outcome is the very best that can be achieved. If wiser men/women had counseled and more 'intelligence/common-sense prevailed' I doubt so much venom would have followed this good British woman's demise. As a human being and privy to their imperfections I cannot bring myself to vilify - nor can I bring myself to praise. RIP.

Re: The Iron Lady
I and many people I knew, hated Mrs Thatcher during her time as prime minister, because what she did made the lives of myself and so many people I knew so difficult. The daily news of places closing and job losses seemed to go on for ever.
Now she is dead, it starts to fall into historical perspective. Her political legacy leaves a sour taste, because the British public and the political establishment repeatedly voted her in and failed to control the damage she did to so many lives. That lack of confidence in the judgement of the electorate and our political system remains. A bit like the Jimmy Savile case, her wrongdoings were in 'clear sight' of society, and nothing was done about it at the time.
That mood of 'no hope for the future' amongst the young unemployed has settled into our culture, the north south divide so firmly established under thatcherism continues to grow.
What would have happened to the UK if not for thatcherism is an open question, but it was a very unpleasant episode that went on far too long. Divisive is the word.
