Re: The Flooding
Looks like Rochdale had a lucky escape with the flooding.

If the wind had blown more to the north.

Re: The Flooding
I don't think it needs 'experts' to know that if sufficient water falls upon the head and the sides of a valley that such a valley will inevitably flood if the outlets at the bottom of the valley are subject to narrowed confines or tidal surge. Canals and rivers have a finite capacity before they overspill. Doh! Any geological survey will show where the origins of the water once ran and how it could, with sufficient rainfall, re-occur. If - and it is a big 'if' -these rainfalls are to become a normal event, as opposed to a freak event, then not to take appropriate steps to alleviate the problems that will occur would be stupid, if not criminal, seeing as the amount of loss and damage that will ensue. BUT - it will take money and lots of it for something that may not happen again for another century. Place yer bets. Are you a 'chancer'?

Re: The Flooding
Due to interesting meterological circumstances in central north america, odds are fairly high that a considerable amount of the atlantic ocean will fall on the UK next week.

Re: The Flooding
Indeed. Such has been a seasonal occurrence for the last 2 decades. If the jet stream changes to the South we will instead get oodles of snow. If it goes farther North it will fall upon Scotland and Norway and snow in Iceland. If it stays where it is - Rochdale may well see some more flooding. Such are the machinations of the planets evolutionary aspects. As Rochdale survived the 16c mini-ice age with only half the population dying I'm sure it will survive a small bit of flooding without loss of life. Hey -ho - and so it doth go -.

Re: The Flooding
Yes, I didn't like to mention that Rochdale does seem particularly well placed to recieve much of the atlantic ocean according to the wind direction as predicted at the moment, but, who can say which way the wind will blow?

Re: The Flooding
If the council have taken the right steps to remove any blockages to the river tunnels and cleared out all road gullies for a half mile radius of the town centre and removed any blockages up stream where overspill is natural - then - the town centre shouldn't suffer too much trauma come the winter rains.
But we shall see what we shall see.
