Yes, I have a pot-bellied wood-burner in my kitchen but it gets too hot for comfort. At the moment, I'm using a small fan-heater in my 10' x 10' conservatory but its still cold so I am getting the calor-gas heater.
They are all priced about £100 but I got this new one for only £60. Have bought two second-hand ones in the past from car boot sales and got stung both times. Neither were working when I got them home.
Let the buyer beware. Caveat emptor!

Re: God forbid,it's winter.
I notice that the Jays,Magpies and the loose bowelled Pigeons take the lion's share of the food I put out. I am trying to find a way to help the small bird fraternity by covering some of the food so that only the small fry get it. The fat balls I hang on the line are OK for the Tits. Any thoughts on tactics?
My wife tells me not to bother, she says they are all birds and need feeding.

Re: God forbid,it's winter.
A feeding table with a low roof favors the smaller birds, but apart from that, attempts to alter the balance between bird species is not usually much use, nature has it's own ways.
One of the things that affect bird numbers, especially the smaller song birds that tend to eat insects, is road noise, which makes hunting for insects slow and difficult for them, and for a surprisingly big area each side of a busy road. Many birds and even some bats hunt insects by listening for them, if they can't hear, they have to use a lot more energy to hunt, and find less food. It's difficult to get away from road noise anywhere now, so a quiet garden where birds can find food of various kinds must be quite a haven for them.

Put the food in a cage that the larger birds can't get in. I got one that works well from Gordon Riggs.past it wrote: I notice that the Jays,Magpies and the loose bowelled Pigeons take the lion's share of the food I put out. Re: God forbid,it's winter.
Hi bird lovers or is it winter haters.. Feeding going well, the word must be getting around I am inundated with feathered friends.
I rolled a fat ball on to the lawn yesterday instead of hanging it on the line. A magpie speared it and flew off with two thirds of it in it's beak. It can be amusing watching the bully boys squabbling over the food and not noticing a robin darting in between picking up the best bits.
One more problem, putting out water, within ten minutes it's frozen. Any thoughts!

Boil a pan full of water. Find a dish that will just cover it and fill the dish with cold water. It will stay unfrozen for at least an hour. Or should do depending on temperature. But not in Siberia.

I was informed today that the majority of RMBC public services are having a really extended closure ... pre, during and after Christmas, through into 2013...
but bin collections will only have a 1-week suspension, starting week commencing 24th December

I have written two pieces on this for RO. Basically, you will have to wait up to a month to get both bins emptied.
Read the main article indexed at the foot of the page first.

Re: God forbid,it's winter.
I know it's still early January but we are already more than two weeks past the 21 Dec, the shortest day. The sun is setting about half an hour later now, I work on about one hour per month. I have snowdrops emerging, what a great sight.
I know I should not wish my life away but roll on spring.

… that brings back memories of being seriously snowed-in an authentic log chalet near the Deutsche Alpenstrasse with several burly technicians for a couple of days, peering out of the windows at a stunning snow forest landscape, no phone signals and wondering how anyone could, or ever would, believe the bigger story. It’s surprising what that incarcerating weather brought: a decade’s solid friendship between a Brit, an Israeli and an Indian resulted … following great confusion for Austrian and other border guards, with our three different nationality passports and travel ménage
Now I just want to hibernate at the thought of heavy snows and shovelling.
