To keep the council estates a bit tidier.

That should be a matter for those who live on council estates just as it is for those who live on private estates. Not enough money to help the homeless so paying for skips should not be countenanced.

Re: The life of a skip
The councils made a rod for their own back when they began to institute charges for tipping. Regardless of the need to reduce land fill it does no good for so much 'crap' to now be left all over the place which will inevitably end up (at the councils/ratepayers expense) in land fill anyway. It's the economics of the mad house. Self-Recycling will never be the full answer as some items cannot be disposed of (economicaly) by any other method than land-fill. Re-use (as in wartime) provides some 'take-up' but has the knock on effect of reducing manufacturing output. The only answer is to reduce the population to manageable proportions - but who is going to volunteer for that????? Whose crazy now??????

How it is? No how its become, it wasn't always that way and nor need it be that way now, its a matter of priorities, and also of not pandering to unreasonable demands, whether made overtly or in kind by using the streets as a tip. The alternative is to tell the homeless if they need somewhere to sleep there's always the skip on the council estate paid for by taxpayers!Charly wrote:We all know how it should be, its not always how it is.

Charly wrote:Well I've just spoken to the housing officer for my area to ask about the possibility of skips on this estate being provided like they were in Smallbridge.
No dates as yet but when the regeneration action for this estate starts there is the chance for tenants to say how they spend whatever money is available.
RBH say they do not have funds for providing skips for rubbish removal.
Charly phone the Township office to enquire about a skip or your local councillors they have a separate fund unless that has changed as well

It wasn't just for council estates anyone in any area could request a skip it wasn't a huge funding scheme but it did cover the cost of a skip being provided and an opportunity to have a good clear out, In one area a skip was delivered the neighbours got together and helped each other to tidy each others gardens & sheds etc which was a huge success.

The money to provide a skip was included in the Township funds "J" and an area could only request one twice in a year it worked well in most areas.
By the way I never had one !

The comment wasn't a personal one, Jean, I was making a general point - funds for skips is ridiculous and is a sign of just how wrong the use of tax payers money by local authorities has become.

Providing a skip cuts down on fly-tipping which costs to clean up anyway, might as well have it in a skip and move it all at once!

Re: The life of a skip
There was a period when the Kirkholt estate got a skip delivered almost every week, the minute it became full another would be delivered and that went on for some time, I remember this happening as I had a relative who once lived there who made regular use of it. I have always paid for my skips - the last one costing me £100 when I had an outhouse knocked down.

Far better to clamp down on fly tipping and seek to prosecute those guilty. Moreover, if the argument stacked up then anyone should be able to order a skip and have the council pay, not just estate tenants.Charly wrote:Providing a skip cuts down on fly-tipping which costs to clean up anyway, might as well have it in a skip and move it all at once!

Re: The life of a skip
The cheapest quote I got when we were doing some work in the garden was £130, but I couldn't put any surplus soil in it (?)
Most people I should imagine dont have enough rubbish to fill a skip but if everyone has a few bits then it soon mounts up.
Might as well have it all in one place then it can be moved all at once.
Anything I cant give away on Freegle I take to the tip, if it fits in the car, otherwise I have to pay to have it shifted which is fine, but I still think its a good idea for a skip to be strategically placed once a year!

Re: The life of a skip
If I, as a private householder' have to pay for a skip, why on earth should those in social housing get one for free?
Why is there some sort of expectation that the council should provide everything for nothing?
Mind you, in Stradhoughton, we have a great household recycling site and free collection of heavy/bulky objects.
Why cant a few neighbours club together and hire a skip? That's what we did. Cost us a tenner per household. We also have a whip-round to fill the salt-bins every winter.
Am a big believer in householders taking some sense of responsibility and keep their areas reasonably free of rubbish. We just bout 500 daffodil bulbs between us and planded them out. Cost us £2 per household.

Re: The life of a skip
You must just have exceptionally co-operative neighbours, Hinch, or have a very persuasive organizer.
I saw in the BBC news that Swansea council have set up a pound shop at one of their landfill sites, to sell dumped stuff that may be good enough to be re-used. Seems like a good idea.

I guess it's a great idea for recycling but that's what the likes of 'Freecycle' does anyway isn't it? No-one would want to open a shop to recycle the filth that gets dumped on the streets close to me I'm afraid.

What do they do with the watercannons when there are no riots? An occasional tour squirting around the streets would be good for them.

We don't have any water-cannons. Only in Northern Ireland.

Life of a Skip - new reality TV show?
Surely a skip positioned in a suitably lively and interesting area, set up with CCTV, could constitute a reality TV show at least on a par with Big Brother and AutumnWatch.

Re: The life of a skip
There are many areas of Rochdale that already resemble a giant skip Striding.
A casual evening stroll round some of the back streets of Milkstone and Deeplish will confirm this.
I saw a guy with a crutch diving into one the other week. Very entertaining.

Twinkle
Perhaps skipdiving could be an event in a set of Rochdale-themed bush-tucker trials.
Didn't Twinkle in Dinnerladies (played by Maxine Peake) relate some escapades involving skips?

Re: The life of a skip
I remember at a previous house I owned hiring a skip because of some work I was doing in the back and front garden. Delivered late one evening ready for me to start the work the following day.
Just parked up behind my home. Got up the following morning and found the skip half filled with rubbish and a couple of spare tyres and an old battered chair.
Quite amazing the fact was I never heard anyone dumping the rubbish in it. If anyone wanted to get rid of the rubbish I would have got a bigger skip and shared the cost with them. The cheek of it but still laugh about it.
